the pins are knocked out first, then in order to get the new brake pads in you have to depress the caliper piston , or the new pad wont slide in . i depressed my pistons in without removing the calipers . if this is something you dont feel comfortable with have a shop do the brakes for you.

open fluid res cap
pry pad a bit with a screw driver from the side
then push out the pin or pins with a drift punch or long nail pins push in towards the car
remove metal springs
pull pads
take a large c-clamp and push the pistons flush with the calipers making sure to keep the boot proper.
apply pad paste to back of pads
wait 10 minutes
replace brake sensor on the pass side
repeat other side make sure the fluid doesn't overflow the res if it gets to high siphon some out with a turkey baster
when done both sides check all your work torque rims to 80ft lb
apply brakes
check fluid level put cap back on
take slow drive apply brakes
bed pads in according to pad specific procedures
or generic if not supplied

Also, check out fkong's post on the W220 section. Brake Job Instructions
I just changed my rears today and it was by far the simplest brake pad replacement I have ever done.
