*HELP* trunk not opening
Hello fellow MB friends,
My 2003 CL trunk does not open or do anything with remote and from inside the car, and when I put the key in and try to open manually, it pops just less than half an inch and doesn't do anything all locked up. Any way to get in trunk besides trying to break any lens ? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

You're saying it unlatches and opens a crack but doesn't auto-open all the way? If so, just push it the rest of the way open. It sounds like the hydraulic pump ran dry and it can't activate the piston to open the trunk. It will feel tough to open, but it will open manually.

Can be a few things.
* Vacuum pump (if you have the auto open/close option).
* Bad rear SAM
* Wiring issues in the loom between the electric latch and rear SAM.

Unfortunately, the SAM is in the trunk. So is the vacuum pump.
There is a mechanical override to the vacuum activated latch, if I recall correctly. The key should unlatch it so you can open it, even if nothing else works correctly. What exactly happens when you try to use the key?

Are these trunk vacuum pumps known for going bad? Mine is leaking it sounds like (loud hissing when trying to activate or opening manually), shocks also worn out (won't stay propped open). Seems like parts that should be rock solid when rarely used. Any feedback?

Even though it starts out as the soft close vacuum issue on the doors, I also end up discussing the truck latch vacuum pump and fix as well.

The latch is pneumatic, and is leaking if you can hear it. The opening mechanism that whirs is hydraulic. If it doesn't go all the way up, there is a leak which you need to patch and then refill the oil, or replace the whole unit.
To get the lid open, use the emergency key underneath, turn the key (try both directions) and once turned, push up on the button. That will mechanically open the lock, bypassing the pneumatics.
