CL600 transmission

Hey guys, my buddy as an 04 cl600 that has been acting up a little. It seems it will gear delay or hesitate. What it is doing is once you get on it hard it down shifts fine but once you get off it will stay in that gear still for a little bit to long until late it decides to change or you slow down more. I am wondering if the valve body is bad or conductor plate maybe even the silonoids, obviously I am not sure. I am going to help him so any info would be great. He is going to try doing.the fluid change with the better 236.14 syn fluid, filter, gasket and electrical pin housing. The fluid does look like it could use a good change.
The transmission is strong other then this issue, no slipping or clinking of gears.
Again help info much appreciated, oh his is an 04 MY.

All fluids look like crap after a couple of thousand miles, looks ain't an issue, smell is, so don't be fooled by brown ATF,your just pissing away money!!

The other tell tale sign is looking for relatively large pieces of material in the corner of the pan!!

Do your friend a big favor, convince him to get a good transmission scan, not an ODB BS scan!!

My car does similar things, the holding on to a gear after a hard pull. I notice it when I step down on normal streets and shoot up to the top of 2nd gear, and then let off. The car stays in the gear for what seems like a long time, unless you bump the shifter over to the upshift side in which case it shifts right away.

In my research into shift logic and such on these cars, I think it happens when you lift abruptly after being full throttle. The car keeps in the low gear to provide engine braking and also to be ready in case you planted your foot again. Once a second or two passes and it's safe to assume you aren't flooring the car still, it upshifts as normal. Both of my CLs have done it, I believe it's normal operation.

Hey ItalianJoe1 are you referring to the shift tronic/manual shift because that would stay in a lower gear until redline then it auto shifts but if you don't go to redline it will stay in that gear until you shift it up.
I am talking about being in auto auto D mode.
That is where I am having the issue, but if you are referring to the same thing then I guess that makes me feel a little better.
It just seems that it didn't do that before but I don't often hammer it that often so maybe I just haven't had it at that spot after getting on it then off it for it to happen, I am not sure.
I just knows I love these cars but between me and my buddy I believe we have covered every possible issue and repairs.
Your reply is appreciated.

Yeah if you're in regular D, and step down, it tends to hang onto the gear. But if you bump the shifter over to the right, like to command an upshift, it will go to the next gear without much delay.

My CL does that, my old 300 SRT8 did it, and my Audi did it. Nothing unusual about hanging onto that gear before upshifting after accelerating harder.

That is good news, I just came off of abc and coil pack issues getting fixed so I guess I am just a bit paranoid thinking every little thing is an issues.
I love the car and power but damn it can be a love hate relationship, this thing is high maintenance like some super model, always something going on.
I appreciate the replies.

Interestingly, My 300 would also kick down very quickly when returning to the throttle after hard braking, which was nice. It made the angry passing of the jerk I just had to slam on the brakes for very expedient.
