Has anyone ever tried to or considered removing the turbos to rebuild them or upgrade them and possibly wrapping them so the heat in the engine bay stops warming your garage in the winter? Is removing the a diy job? The coil packs & plugs are an easy change and they looked accessible.

Yes, some have done upgrades to the turbos but it is not an easy job since you have to make custom turbo headers. No one, to my knowledge, has ever heat wrapped one so it does not heat up their garage in the winter. Not sure why heating the garage in the winter would be a bad thing?

Are you going to wrap the whole engine so it does not give off heat? The engine gets hot and is a much larger heat sink.

I think!!!!! the turbos get hotter than the engine. I could be wrong but my guess is its hot exhaust gas. As far as up grades for the turbos; I was more interested in possibly upgrading the internal components so no problem with fitting.

Everything I’ve read on the subject agrees, turbos are usually hotter than the engine itself. You may want to look into the book “maximum boost” by Corky Bell. He discusses a lot of these things

I removed and rebuilt the turbos on my first V12TT, a 2004 W220 S600.

It's something that you would do if you NEEDED to do it.

What do you need to know?

How challenging was it and did you upgrade any of the internal parts?

I removed the front subframe and left the engine in place, which reduces a lot of the work, but it's still difficult.

My turbos had burnt oil, so I simply rebuilt them with new bearings etc. My car was re-mapped, but I've heard a lot of people have problems when they try to upgrade.

The simplest first step is a re-map, and the second step to fit S65 turbos, which are slightly larger.

When I fixed everything and got the charge cooling etc working right, I broke the transmission, so then I had to repair that.

What's the most difficult thing you've done so far?
