04 Cl500 to 55k (m113k) Project. Bringing this car back to life.

Picked up this 04 CL 500 super cheap. Couldn't pass on the offer. Always wanted a W215 but in a bigger engine size. When I went to pickup the car I saw it sitting on the ground (I knew abc had issues). I turned the key and nothing (tow truck driver put a jump box to it) few minutes later she kicked over (and sounded amazing) that is until the smoke started. My pockets told me I should pass on this project but my guts said buy the car. Anyway the Paint was fading, the radio didn't work, was over heating, and interior could use some help.

I indeed still purchased the car. We put it on the tow truck and towed it back to my garage. I immediately decided to toss the traditional abc system away and get some adjustables (coilovers that is) So a few days of research and I decided to go with the Ceika Adjustables. Put my order in for the coilovers and they were custom made and to my door within 45 days. I received them on a Thursday but had to work so couldn't have them installed till the weekend. I installed them over that weekend Saturday and Sunday. Very easy job.

Now the car is off the ground sitting pretty. Now to find out why the car is overheating. Upon inspection I realized the coolant system need more antifreeze. So what the heck lets just do a flush. Flushed the system and replaced with authentic mb af. Took the car for a spin 40 min later the temps went up. I realized the fan wasn't cutting on. Ordered a new fan assembly so I'm waiting on that now......

I want to discuss my engine swap with a 55k motor.....I know it can be done so therefore I'm going to do it no matter who may think it's a waste of my time and money. Just some background info I'm doing about 90% of the mechanical work myself so this is where I will save some cash. What all would I really need for this swap to work?

Scn coding? Ecu swap or upgrade? Ignition but do I really need this with coding? Heat exchanger? If I'm missing something feel free to chime in. I should have m113k motor very shortly. If anyone has done this swap successfully I am all ears.

Keep us posted. I don't know about the swap but I am interested in the coilover swap. How do the Ceikas ride? Did you get comfort springs? did you opt for the adjustable rebound & compression? What spring rate did you get? I am thinking of switching from Yellowspeed to Ceika. Good luck with the swap!
Thank You
Rick

Ceika

These are the Ceikas I ordered. They ride fine however haven't had much road use since they have been installed. They seem solid and hold the car up well. Not much bounciness as I heard with the yellowspeeds. I got the 16kg front 12kg rears with all four helper springs. Will be adding aircups in the next upcoming week's.

i installed some cieka coilovers for someone in my area and got to test them as well

they are identical as the yellowspeeds...

however cieka as a company is MUCH better about offering different spring rates, and some other options like their “air cup” to raise and lower the car on air cushions, and “helper springs”. On the other hand if I recall correctly, yellowspeed was faster about shipping

My overall opinion of yellowspeed 20/14kg spring rate setup VS cieka 14/10kg setup Is that being the same struts/components, it rides very similar to the yellowspeeds of course, fairly tight and accurate driving around the city/neighborhoods.

at first I believed the cieka 14/10kg spring rate had solved the bounce issue I experienced with the yellowspeeds... but instead of bounce around 35-100mph, the bounce was still there yet instead seemed to happen at different speeds than the yellowspeeds

m113 to m113k swaps are not as difficult as people used to pretend it was.... I know of more than one person in my region to do so recently. In fact I think there’s a thread about a w210 wagon installing a m113k I commented in recently

I’ve not done the supercharger swap but the quick and easy way to get this done is to swap the following from the donor car -

> engine from m113k S class or CL class (oil pan setups are different on E class for example, may not fit your CL subframe)
>ecu from m113k car
>drive authorization system components (ignition, key, shifter) MUST MATCH ECU OR BE REPROGRAMMED
>m113k wiring harness

the rest of the car should bolt right up, including the transmission but it’s your decision whether you think your transmission should be upgraded of course, just like the heat exchanger

Great thanks for that info. I'm in the works of getting the engine now but unfortunately the ecu is not available. So I guess I will have to order a ecu ignition and shifter from eBay. But I was thinking pmercury could do the programming.......

Ecu does not have to be from the same car as the engine , and I’m not sure it’s possible to re program a 500 series ecu to handle a clutched supercharger. However one of the experts at my shop believes it could be possible with the 2003+ ecu you have, though I’m not sure anyone has accomplished this

ironically you’ll find for sale “sets” of keys, ignitions, ecus and shifters for sale on eBay. Often for a very reasonable price considering these parts were often thousands of dollars each from Mercedes

the one downside to this method is Mercedes will be unable to provide you with duplicate/spare keys without proper proof of ownership of that car.

That means in an ideal swap, you will request the rights of ownership to be transferred to you when you buy the “ecu/das kit” I am talking about. Sounds like an odd request to ask a seller, however it is not unlikely to feasibly gain ownership of a car that was wrecked and being parted out. Most people selling the ecu/shifter/ key/ ignition combo are not going to be using that car anymore...

the second caveat to the ecu/das kit idea is when we order new keys for customers, the second step to providing the customer a new key is to program the key to the car, requiring dealership-level software/hardware. If you were able to provide proof of ownership of your key/ignition/shifter, I don’t believe it would be hard to work out for your service advisor/technician to comply with your seemingly odd request. I would be OK with doing it for a customer myself

it sounds complicated at first but for someone going through the lengths to do a m113k swap, this shouldn’t be too difficult
