Clean strut?

Hey guys 3 out of 4 of my struts do not have that dust shield plastic thing that goes around it, The boot, anyways I have researched and the only way to install another is to remove the whole strut which is a mission so I will start cleaning it once a week, the metal chrome tube that goes into the shock which is the only part that worries me.

What could I use to clean it from time to time?

I bet you're not going to jack up the car & clean the strut shafts every week as it's a very time consuming process. They do sell the dust boots for our CL's now but in order to put them on, you'll need to remove the strut from the car & disconnect the hydraulic hose from the strut so it's fairly a big job. If you want to save & prolong the life of the old struts, I would recommend wrapping it w/ some heavy duty nylon sheet but soft enough so it can compress under load then glue or tie wrap it at both ends. That's what I did & it's holding up well.

Initially, I bought the clear nylon sheet that's commonly used for the kitchen cabinet's drawers which you can find at any local Walmarts. They, however a little stiff so I don't think it would compress well under load so I went w/ the heavy duty grey tarp instead. With the car on jackstands so the struts are fully extended, I wrapped it around each strut & used heavy duty glue to seal the seam then tied both ends with tie wraps. Been driving for awhile now & it's holding up well.
