MB - Big improvements in JD Power IQS

Mercedes-Benz jumped from 25th (2006) to 5th (2007) overall in the recently released JDP IQS survey. Of note, the all-new S, and facelifted E and SL-Class models garnered Best in Class awards. The S-Class had the fewest problems in the industry at 72 problems per 100 cars. Also interesting, the new CL recorded 69 problems per 100 cars which would have been best in class by a large margin. However, the sample size was too small. Either way, strong results from MB which is really good to see.

i have long felt that MB owners are far more particular about their cars than many other marques. This, to me , would explain the greater number of "problems per car " that MB has had over the last several years. May, just maybe, we expect our $50,000 plus cars to be that much more than the rest of the pack. I know I do. That said, I have had very few real problems with my now 7 year old E430. All that aside, congratulation to MB for addressing any problems they have had and making the superior automoblies that we all know we have!! Makes my decision to buy a new CL very soon a "no brainer"

The thing is...INHO....

When Mercedes went from the W140 to the W220 body - they were facing a rise in costs to produce, and rather than tack on additional cost to the customer, they reduced quality big time to compensate.

In all fairness...and with logic, I say this.... Mercedes S Class buyers... paying a base of $88,000 for their car (UNLOADED) ... would gladly spend $92,000 (an extra $4000) if it meant that quality of workmanship, materials, and functionality of the car was flawless.

That is why the cost of the S550 is more than the S500's MSRP - and look how it is selling - but look more how it is holding up.

The 1992 W140 400SE (swb) stickered at $85,000, and it wasn't until a price reduction in 1995 that S-Classes began to appear on the street with some regularity. The 2000 W220 S430 (US debut 3/99) was priced in the low $70's and with the lower pricing came lower quality. Today's S Class is actually well priced for the level of quality particularly when compared to other cars in the class.

The W140 was unreal. I remember that the 1992 300SE stickered (77K I think) for more the the previous 1991 560SEL (75K). That was a little too much for some buyers. You had to spend like 95K or more to get a 560SEL replacement, the 500SEL. Yikes. I loved the build and sheer over the topness of the W140, it was truly the last of the cost no object Benzes.

This time around Mercedes is a much leaner company and they've managed to put the quality back to much higher degree than the W220 ever had, but also not go overboard with the pricing. Yes the S-Class sales are holding up better than I expected with the new Lexus LS on the ground for almost a year now. The fact that it is doing well in the quality surveys only helps its sales IMO.

I have never understood this, does this mean that 72 and 69 cars out of 100 for each respective model have problems? I never have understood what this means

I think it means accumulated problems per 100 cars. So averagely within those 100 cars for each respective model, there are 72 problems for S-class and 69 problems for CL-class (I'm not sure whether same problems found on 2 or more cars is counted as 1 problem or it is counted as 2 or more problems)

But then again, I could be wrong

Agree.....new CL has superb quality from all the anecdotal datapoints....

JD Powers is fairly worthless.....most jaded owners of $100K+ cars don't waste time filling out a silly survey....mfrs precisely know their quality levels based upon their warranty repair costs/lemon law buyback costs....statistically irrelevant "surveys" simply insult intelligence of most buyers....or self-select IQ of those who actually believe such "data"....

And those who fill out surveys tend to be same types who complain that their 500hp+ car only gets 12MPG; or that perf tires only last 10K mis, not 40K mis.....not all "problems" are equal.....an allegedly difficult-to-use Comand/iPod interface is far different from a defect that causes car to fail/become disabled in midst of traffic, jeopardizing one's health/safety.....
