Whining noise at 2000rpm

i get a whining noise either when accelerating or decelerating to 2000 rpm. It only does it when driving, not in Park or Neutral. Any ideas?

Heres a video

I can't really hear anything out of the ordinary in the video.

If you're sure it only happens when moving then you need to check everything in the driveline - propshaft, driveshafts and wheels.

I had this on mine abiut 1 month ago - it was diagnosed as a failing tandem pump (combined pump for ABC and power-steering) My car is a 08 CL500, and has 69k miles on it.

The replacement part was £900 and the labour was £1100 (it is about 9 hours labour).

I would get it looked at soon (if you haven't already).

I am also having this problem. Did you ever get it diagnosed? It is different from the noise caused by accumulators going bad. I have had those problems in the past and replaced all three. It seems to me like the ABC pump getting tired but I am hoping not...

I had the same noise, in my case it was the pulsationdamper on the abc pump. Not to difficult to replace, damper here in Europe is about 190 eur.

@Basso1001 Thanks for the info. Were you having an identical noise to OP? The whine only around 2000rpm on deceleration?

I ask because I changed my dampener 6yrs and 80k miles ago. The sound back then was very different. I find it hard to believe that it would be that again. If it is, I would be the first on these forums to have replaced it twice in one ownership.. a true wear item!

If you have replaced the damper then it must be something else. I had also a wining sound because my mechanic had changed the steering fluid for standar steering fluid. Thought my pump went bad and orderded a n refurbished one.
A few days later he called me and told me about the fluid, changed it and the noise was gone. These are very sensitive cars with lots of problems....

I agree with you, it's unlikely but something to think about: Like many on here, I changed my dampner when the car was ~10yrs old and ~40k miles. Since I changed it its been ~6yrs and ~80k miles. Based on that logic, it may need another replacement.

This sound is more subtle though and I think when the dampner goes, it goes completely and is much louder.

Hopefully OP responds because we are having the exact same noise at the exact same rpm/engine conditions.

As I wait on OP to check his inbox, I thought I would add a note for anyone else having this exact noise. OP does not have ABC in his car given it is a 2012. I do have ABC and am having the same sound... Implication being it is not ABC related.

May not be the ABC...

FWIW to the Thread: I just had my ABC pump replaced (Side story break: It blew up, and spewed fluid all over my hot engine... You have NO IDEA how much smoke BELLOWS out of your car when this happens... People around me where honking and waving thinking I WAS ON FIRE! [side story]/), and I've found the same whine is happening with the new ABC pump installed. The whine I hear (in my case) is directly related to my engine RPM, so if I stomp the gas and lift off real fast, as the RPMs quickly rise the tone changes to a higher pitch whine, despite my speed only changing like 0.5 mph. It's something to do with the engine's RPM or transmission speed alignment/regulation between the two.

I'm taking it in to my shop next week to find out... As I've already spent $6,000 this year "reconditioning" this 2008 to be mechanically gorgeous, my mechanic has declared me "in it to win it.." which I think means there is NO WAY I could ever sell this car and recoup any loss LOL .

Praying to fix it for $1,000 or less... "Pray with me Forrest, pray!"

Joel

I had a light wining noise due to wrong oil in the powersteering side off the abc/ powersteering pump. The mechanic had put in the standard steering oil and it is now replaced by the wgright oil from Febi 06161 oil and the noise is completely gone.

Just for curiosity sake, is your Air Conditioning on when you hear this whining? If not I'm willing to bet the pulsation dampener is once again bad. I strongly urge you to change it, do a hydraulic flush (CHF11S) + filter, and add half a bottle of QMI/True Brand stop leak for preventative measures.

I was leery on adding any additive to the ABC system however after 15k or so mile I haven't had any adverse effects. I've been running that stuff in my '07 SL550 and noticed an immediate positive difference in the suspension with the raising and lowering is lightning fast.

Following up here as I had the same problem and solved it. It was the front accumulator. I had no squishiness or any of the usual symptoms. I had a noise identical to the one in the video but the dead giveaway for me, having just replaced the rear accumulator, was a grumble on start up when the engine us hot/right after it was shut off. That was the noise I solved with the rear accumulator.

Odd part is, I already replaced the front accumulator almost 3yrs ago to the day. I guess it was getting tired already.
