Auto Week cover story on 2007 CL

The Auto Week cover story about the new CL is worth a look. My assumption is that they have published accurate information. Based on the pictures of the new CL design , I am indifferent. Although it will be a bit wider and lower, which is very good, it does not evoke the same reaciton as when I saw the current design several years ago. The idea of a high-reving NA 6.3 liter engine for the AMG version is appealing. The fuller wheel arches are a positive, although the front treatment looks far too much like it has adopted design cues from Nissan's Maxima and Altima. In general it does not make a bold statement to me, although it may when I see it on the road.
I am curious about this forum's participants' reactions to the new design. If I knew how to create a vote reply, I would do so to make it easier for responses. Choices like: Love it, It is OK, Indifferent, Want to reserve judgment until more pictures are available, Indifferent or Not what I expected for the CL.

My opinion of that article is that what was written is accurate, however the pictures are someone's imagination only.

I'm going to wait till it's here before I make any judgements on the looks.

If you want my thoughts, it looks like crap. I won't be in line for one.

This link will get you to both the 2007 S-Class and the CL articles, so everyone can comment based upon the same information. Based upon Autoweek's rendering of the new CL, I am not as excited as I had hoped I would be. I had expected Mercedes to take heed from the Bentley GT, and update the CL to be the pinnacle of 4-seat super coupes. So far, I'm not impressed. Not that the Bentley GT is the definitive answer in this market segment, it is stylish and unlike anything else on the road. The CL just doesn't look special. Maybe when the final picture is available or I get to see it in person, I'll re-evaluate my opinion.

I bought my Lexus SC coupe when it was the older body style and it was so radical and unique at the time. I was excited when they were coming out with a new body style, but when I saw it, it was all dissapointment. So I waited, and later bought my CL600. I love the look of the current CL, this new one looks weak. I think MB did worse in style with the CLK. Now the CL looks worse. It looks very conservative.

i think it wont be so bad.
pictures in that article are very simple imaginations.
new ML - looks very good
CLS - beautiful
SLK - also nice
when i first saw some spy pictures of the C215 in 1998 i was quite affraid that the new CL is going to lose his image.
but if somehow next generation of cl will be looking like auto-week's photoshops i'll be dissapointed.

I think the CLS is pretty "Japanese" looking as well..... Not really my desire for a European luxury sedan/coupe. I beleive all new MB models for the next few years will all look like that.

i dont think MB will make a car so ugly like the picture autoweek made. just b/c they made computer images doesnt mean that it will look anything like that. check out germancarfans.com on monday for official pics of the s-class.

Good topic VictoryRoad!

I agree with some of the other comments that the '08 cl is a step in the wrong direction by borrowing current played-out styling cues from japanese auto makers like Acura/Honda, there's even dare I say it, hints of the 7 series bmw. I have finally accepted the cls as bieng a styling hit (all of it), but I just see the new 216 following the storyline of the '98 S 500 coupe...bombing out!

O.K.-It's true, I am partial to the flat-out beauty of the current 215; but I'll trade in for a S550 or cls55 before ever considering the 216.

everytime a new CL appears it is the most beautiful and technologically advanced car available. Period. I do not think the next model will be an exception.

When I first saw pictures of the W221 S-Class on the web, I was not impressed. Now that I've seen it in person, it looks stunning. If the new CL is anything like a coupe-ified W221 (which all spy shots seem to confirm), it is going to be get out the diapers HOT.

I agree that the new S Class looks quite good on...

the road. I sold my 03 CL55 and in the next week will take delivery of a BMW 650i Convertible. Perhaps the new CL will look very good on the road as well. They did a very good job on the interior of tghe new S, IMHO. Not only that, but the standard power is now where the 500's should have been a couple of years ago.

My post was made on 6/14/2005, and I guess age has taken it's toll on the link.
