Lamborghini Murcielago v CL65 AMG

Took the car up the car wash just now, and as I was waiting to pull out a Lamborghini Murcielago shoots past me.

Would you beleive it, he takes the same turning as I do, which just happens to be a 3 mile straight road followed by some bends, followed by another 2 mile straight.

He had a few bursts of speed up to 100ish but nothing more. The first part is hilly so overtaking is not an option.

We came up to the bends and he shot round them, I was lagging a bit.

As the last bend came up he floored it and so did I, however I had to play a bit of catch up due to the bends.

There was a car coming up in front which we caught, but then it indicated to turn right, so he had to slow and so did I. I knew there was a 1.5 mile straight after this, and as I thought he might, he gunned it. I couldn't hear the radio over the sound of his engine/exhausts, an awesome sound

I followed him up to xxx mph, and then the best bit, I indicated, and over took him!!

As I sailed past the two guys looked over at me with a strange look. When I got to the end of the road they turned one way and me the other, the passenger was looking at the V12 Biturbo badges on the side of my car :p

Made my day, and im still smiling now.

haha I would have taken out my cell phone and held it to my ear, then nonchalantly given a quick "whats up" nod as you pass like you are cruising to the nearest Taco Bell....

Imagine of he had just been telling his buddy how the Murci is the fastest car on the road... the poor guy may be at the Lambo dealer today screaming "there's something wrong with this car!"...

Nice job of ruining his day Maff....

Sure would have made a sweeeeeet video.... don't see that happen everyday thats for sure...

He proabably thought it was a CL55, there are only 36 CL65's in the UK, so they are quite rare. He might not even know a CL65 existed I guess.

The Murci clocks in at 3.6 0-60 and 12.0 1/4 mile @ 121 while the CL65 is 4.2 0-60 and 12.7 1/4 mile @116. Doesnt seem like there would be much passing done in a stock CL65 if the bull was really on the gas. But drivers and response time does make a difference.

The figures you are quoting are from a Car & Driver estimate. The numbers from a Motor Trend road test are 0-60 in 3.8, 0-100 in 8.5 and 1/4 mile 11.8 @ 121mph. These would definitely put it in the Murcielago ballpark.

Fair enough, but both the cars were already at speed when they gunned it, so the results MAY be different.

Though I agree, I still do think that a Murci is slightly faster than a CL65 in everyway. He probably let off a bit or something?

1/4 mile times you post for the CL65 are a little slow, I managed 12.7 @ 116 in my CL55 with 100hp less than my new '65.

Plus after 100mph the CL65 is in a world of it's own, with its 738ft/lb torque.

I didn't mention that I overtook him at 145mph

Just so you know how fast these cars are in a straight line, results at the URL below are the top speed results for an event I go to at a 2 mile runway.

The '65s are the fasting thing there bar the Ruf Porsches and the 600bhp 996 Turbos.

Your see the Lambo I raced down the list somewhere :p

i honnestly dont think that this list is that accurate.

ive taken my SL500 (R129) to a GPS rated 150.1. and it was still easlly going up .(i had to slow down for a turn) and i was not even CLOSE to the red line. and ive head of people doing 170 in there R129 500s. and ive seen a vid of a guy in a 996 GT2 do 203MPH on is odo. so im guessing that was upwards of 190ish.

and i know for a fact that an SL65 can go faster than the listed 173.

unless im reading these wrong. i dont think this list is A+ information.

Cool

Way to torch that butt. Awesome Kill. Wish that I could have run up next to you and got me a piece of that.
I did 165mph in the SL55 that I previously owned, and slowed as the road was ending.

I hit 170mph in my 2004 E55 Kleemann K3 and it was smooth as glass. I was at about 5700 rpm if I remember correctly. Could have probably hit 185 and still be under redline.

True. It just seemed unrealistic since I have raced a few Murci's in my GT2 and I did beat them but by a very small margin. When I have raced 65s it was no contest. But as we see conditions, response times and start speeds make a world of difference. The top gear track times for the two are pretty far apart "Murcielago - 1.23.7 & Mercedes CL65 - 1.29" but I understand this race had nothing to do with track speed. All and all for the price the 65s do perform.

Went back to the car wash today, and guess who was there - the Lambo owner with his Murcielago!

Had a chat to him over a cuppa and he said he couldn't figure out why he couldn't loose the Merc when I was following him, then it all became clear when I overtook him and he saw the rear end!

He said he was giving it full welly, and he doubted he could have got much more speed out of it.

When he first came over I thought he was going to have a go at me for overtaking him!
