AUTOCAR road test of CL63

This review is quite negative and actually pis*ed me off. Only last week they wrote glowing reviews of the CL600 and now they are writing negative comments on the CL63....please read and tell me what you think.

Simply stated:

He has no idea of what an AMG is supposed to be.

If an AMG the same as the CL550 / CL 600 - there would be no need for an AMG Varient.........

2010 CL65
Agree...clueless reviewer who seems to want to advocate guys get a far more sensible S230 diesel/AWD.....

Have an '07 CL600.....view it as a spectacular overall car....but am eagerly awaiting trading it in for CL63 this Summer....

Haven't yet driven CL63...but I suspect its steering precision, sharper handling, paddleshifter tranny, NA motor, latest-tech AMG brakes, sport steering wheel, exhaust note, sport seats, much cooler body kit/wheels/brake calipers, etc etc will make it the easy choice for anyone <70yo who's choosing among CLs....

The CL63 vs CL65 comparo will be far more interesting, esp in bumpy twisties and on wet roads....

all fair comments, but I was annoyed by the description of the ride as 'harsh' as I have test driven the CL600 and it drove like a dream, just like a merc should, really comfortable. Now, I realise the AMG is always going to be sportier and therefore a firmer ride but I have owned a SL55 AMG with the performance pack's Nurburgring suspension which was excellent but I would not say the ride was at all 'harsh'.

I guess it is just one guys view, but coming from a magazine who's opinion I normally value, which only last week ran a full test of a CL500 and a mini test of a CL600 and gave them both glowing reviews, its seems like unfairly harsh criticism.

The review is nonsense.. The ride is HARSH? It is the same exact chasis as ythe other cars they raved about. My 63 is so smooth I cannot imagine not being happy in a CL..Why would the interiors be lacking it is still a CL? This is such a great engine and the CL looks GREAT with the AMG package

I agree on the surface with the author, which is why I bought the CL600 (07). the 600 is faster car. why sacrifice ride quality and straight line performance for a touch (if any ) road feel. I would bet that the variance between the skidpad #'s of the 63 and 600 is very minimal.
the single reason for the 63 is the look. It is a better looking car with less to offer in my opinion. That is not bashing AMG I own an e55 and love it, but there is no v12 option on that car and it is light enough to be somewhat nimble. the CL is such a heavy car no matter what suspension you have on it your fighting gravity and that is a fight taht is rarely won on that heavey of a vehicle. I love my 600 and if they were only to offer it in the sport package it would be perfect in my opinion. (except of course for the CL65 but 190k is a ton and I have to draw the line somewehre and that place is my CL600).

Question To WSH, why on earth would u trade your 600 for a 63?

WSH, your CL 600 can be modified by Kleemann or Renntech and be made way faster than a 63 can be for sure. You can also retrofit a CL 65 bodykit and brakes and exhaust onto it also, and then it'd be perfect.

Or, if you have to have a new '08 car again, why not stick with a V-12 and get the new CL65? You tweak a 65 even slightly and you'll have a rocket on wheels.

Oh well, I guess I just see a twin-turbo V-12 as better than a N/A V-8.

no one has driven the cl63 so who knows how the ride is. Just because your CLS 63 rides well does not mean the CL does (although I am sure it does).

the 600 is way more tunable until they come out with twin turbs for the 63 but that will be an expensive tune job. why would anyone trade in a 600 for a 63????
I LOVE MY 600!

I think he means more road noise (tyres). Anyways, I think the harsh ride was because he kept the transmission in 'S' for the review. As a first, AMG has now calibrated the throttle response, suspension settings and transmission together on the new CL and S-Class. In Sport (S) or Manual (M), I think you get the harshest ride. Comfort (C) on the other hand will greatly improve the ride and start the car off in 2nd gear with a lazy throttle response.
