It boggles my mind that customers paying $200k for an SL65, S65, or CL65 would care about fuel efficiency. The annual cost difference between 15mpg and 20mpg, with gas at $5/gallon, is $1,000. I doubt that AMG65 buyers are cocnerned about the $83/month cost.

But whatever, if the new engine is really 700HP and torquey, then they won't have trouble moving it.

Well said....

MPG is fairly irrelevant to consumers of $200K commuter cars, who often have short, intra-epicenter commutes, but high oppty costs of freq refueling (amusingly, my 63 030 delivers some 1-2MPG less than my prior '07 SL65; part of why I'm reverting to '09 CL65....my attempt to reduce my fuel costs and carbon footprint)....real question is what is range of cars for commuting duty (size of fuel tanks vs 6-8MPG in <10mi, intra-SF/SilicVy/BH/Greenwich commutes)...

Despite all the eco-nonsense coming out of Germany/Lond/PaloAlto/Berkeley/SF, reality is most of world's plutocrats live/work/have wkend houses in SF/BH/Greenwich/Lond/MC....and want $200K V12 commuter cars....am pleased that VW (per recent Autocar article) is figuring out how to adapt Veyron motor for use in future Bent commuter cars.....

I imagine the best way to reduce the carbon footprint is not to create a demand by purchasing a brand new car. There is carbon savings in not consuming resources to make one brand new car when the one you own is just fine even though it get less gas mileage.

I think it's more world PR than owner cost efficiency. That last one has never been a priority with AMG Mercedi. The world wants greener cars. There will be new rules that all cars (as an average) of a brand wil not emit more than so-and-so amount of CO2. My guess is that this is where this is coming from.

Very perceptive observation that seems lost on many carmakers. This is one of the primary reasons I dumped my M6. I remain astounded that BMW would consider a 200-250 mile range adequate. Given the value of my time, I'll make back the difference in cost between the M6 and my CL600 within a few months, LOL.

I'm fascinated to see how long it will take for the hair-shirt enviros to realize that not consuming resources results in lower business revenues, fewer jobs, declining share values, reduced pensions and medical coverage, i.e. economic collapse. Moderation is undoubtedly a virtue in many circumstances, but the hard economic reality is that improved human welfare depends upon economic growth.
