Inside M275 Engine (V12TT) and everything else...
I ran across some information about the Mercedes M275 V12 Biturbo engine and wanted to share it with you guys.
This demystified a lot of stuff for me, maybe you guys can pick out some other stuff.
Some of the diagrams are slightly wrong, as they belong to the M285 which is used in the Maybach, it's slightly different - water cooled alternator and 2nd AC compressor.
Pictures are arranged by category.
Also available on in my galleries: http://photo.thegetlucky.com/p749729540

These red 'plugs' look like knock sensors - do you have any information confirming this? I read somewhere that combustion ionization is used to optimize timing - I wonder whether the knock sensors are in fact still on our engines?
BTW - many thanks for these pics! awesome eyecandy!!

Those are in fact knock sensors, and they are used to help determine ignition timing to prevent preignition. The computer does use Ionic Current Detection for misfire diagnosis, but at full load at high rpms, the computer reverts back to the good old crank sensor for misfire diagnosis. If the crank slows down ever so slightly, it is determined to be a misfire. Also, the OP was slightly misinformed, as the alternator is liquid cooled on all biturbo cars, not just the Maybach. The turbos are liquid cooled, in addition to the oil feeds and returns also, making for some interesting plumbing on the engine. Also, the black plastic piece between the cylinder valley is a vacuum reservoir for the divertor valves and the wastegates, which are all computer controlled by solenoid valves directing the engine vacuum and boost from the manifold.

BTW, do yo have any explanation why AMG went to a rear oil sump vs. the MB V12TT front sump? Cant be the chassis because they put the these engines in the same models.

Oil sumps are determined by the vehicle chassis the engine is installed in. The 220 and 215 are front sump, 230s are rear sump. Same with the 55kompressors, the 211 and 219 are rear sump, and the 220 and 215 are still front sump.
