Building the V8 Kompressor ! (Warning for 56k Users)
Just thought everyone would like to see these from Germancarfans.com. The exact link is : http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cf...014.002&Page=1

Very interesting, the quality of the castings is impressive. Note how part of the AMG "uniform" is also removing wrist-watches to avoide the chances of them damaging components or getting snagged in the machine tools. The machine to tighten all the cylinder head bolts together is especially interesting. It must make building engines for a Chrysler Neon seem a bit tame...

Well, your name definately says it all, great pics.
This would probably be the coolest tour that a car-nut like me could take.

It's a great way to build limited production engines because every person can do the complete job so if people are off sick or on vacation, production can continue. It also adds interest. I would think that by the time you've made your 1000th engine, you'll be ready for a change though even in this environment.
About 15 years ago, I saw Porsche making V8s for the 928 on a line with 20 stations so that at any one time, each person was only making part of the engine. That left them exposed to people leaving/being absent, so they had to move people around regularly to spread the skills as well as providing interest.
What really surprises me is the size of the supercharger (picture just above). You can see it from the top of the built engine of course, but seeing it out took me by surprise.

The supercharger also comsumes 91 bhp when running at full speed, about 15% of the gross power output, leaving a net of 500.... No wonder the gas mileage is as it is....
