Thoughts on a new CL65...
Hey guys, just have a few questions for you. I know that most here have had (or even do have) multiple AMGs. I will have the opportunity to pick up a off lease CL65 in the next few months. Was at the dealer 2 days ago and he has a customer that typically babies his cars and upgrades every 2 years. This guy evidently has an S63, a CL65 and an SL63. Uses them for fun and daily transport. Anyway, with the finance offers and great APR's I was thinking of picking up his used CL65 if it truly is in great shape. The problem is that there is virtually no personal info on the CL65 on the web. There are so few that even youtube doesn't have many videos. Long and short, would this be a good pickup, a reliable car, a good stablemate to my E63? Let me know, thanks. Of course I would have it certified to extend the warranty. Besides, someone else has already taken the brunt of the AMG depreciation (it's an '07).

You might want to drive both a CL65 and CL63, right now the CL65's sell used for about $30K+ over the CL63. All the CL's are great cars and unless you are very familar with the CL model most people could not tell the difference between them in looks both inside and out. The difference comes with the performance. Check them out and decide where you will be driving and if that extra bang is worth the extra bucks.

It must then be a 2008 CL65 as he picked it up mid 2007. What mods are you running that your car is such a beast. One of the reasons I wanted a 65 is for the mod potential. My dealer will RennTech it and uphold the warranty. The E63 is and will be the daily driver. The 65 for cruising and schmoozing...... not to mention a little butt kicking

Do you know what options came with the performance package. I believe he has that. Are the rims different? I know the LSD and the 186mph limit. Anything else. Tried searching on AMG's website but can't seem to find any info and MBUSA no longer allows you to build these AMG cars.

These wheels actually came standard on the CL65 40th Anniversary special. That car was going for about $300K at release (only 40 were built and it had a $40K "Alubeam" paint job).

You can see that they list the performance package for the CL63 but not for the CL65. However, yahoo even lists the 40th Anniversary Edition as an option for the CL65. I can't find anything that says that MB offered the performance package on the CL65. The specific car in question may have the "performance package" wheels as a dealer installed item.![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)

Excellent. Let me know when you can. Love the pics in the other post. The ivory interior scares me tho. Would worry about keeping it clean. Beautiful though. Hey, have you guys ever thought of a sprint booster in a CL65? Have one in the E63 and I know guys have them in the CL600 and the 55's. Maybe the 65's don't need it with all that torque available down low. Just throwing it out there.

Are you guys talking about the latest shape CL65, I haven't seen a post yet
with a picture of the new car. Does the latest shape CL still have the 5 speed
auto? Just interested!

Yes, I believe it is still the 5 speed. I've been told that the 65 engine is too much for the 7 speed to handle...?

The running theory is that the 7-speed is not able to handle the gobbs of torque produced by the 65 engine. Evidently the 5-speed has been rock solid. I haven't driven one but that is what I have heard.

My dealer tells me that the new 7 speed cannot handle the torque of the CL65. The 5 speed has proven to be trouble free and able to handle the torque without any problems. The 5 speed is a better gearbox.

The engine is great at 5500 revs where max torque and bhp are developed.
This is more like a sports car, I have driven a E63 and preferred my E55.
For sports saloons and coupes such as E,S,CLS,and CL you definitely
need a supercharged/turbo engine with lots of low down torque.
Do they scrape any more torque out of the 63 engine in the salon/sedan
and coupe models. The E63 certainly did not have the exhaust note of my SL63. Tom might know!!

No it doesn't. I have been thinking, I believe the 63 only works in the SL.

Guess things are different across the pond but in the USA the top speed limit is 70 mph and the average speed is about 45-55 mph. I'm not saying that it isn't fun to have a lot of power on demand but some of these numbers are over kill. The new 5.5 liter engine is higher tech then the older single overhead cam engines and has all the power needed in normal driving. Now if you want to go really fast and have a great handling sports car for a good price buy a new Vette. For the cost of a new CL65 you can buy a new CL550 and a new ZO6 Vette and still have change coming back.
especially in a heavy car ( not the car, but the people and luggage) need
a high torque engine( pulling power) I think. My SL63 is not so much fun
driving slowly in comfort mode whereas my S600 will cruise at 60 whilst feeling
smooth and punchy. What new 5.5 litre engine do you refer to, mine is a 6.3
or to be precise 6208cc.
