2008 CL63 tires - 7500 miles? Hankook V12 EVOs?

Hi All -

I have a 2008 CL63 with the 010 wheels.

I only have about 7500 miles on the car but I think it's time for new tires.

Question #1: Is that normal to need new tires at 7500 miles?
Question #2: Aug2009 Car & Driver just did a tire test: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...mparison_tests

And they put the Hankook Ventus V12 EVOs in 2nd place (beating the Michelin PS2s on dry skidpad and just about matching on the wet skidpad).

The Hankook's are literally half the price of PS2s. What's your opinion on tires? Go with the Hankooks? PS2s? Originals?

2010 CL65
Have obtained about 6K mis from rear tires and 12K mis from fronts (on either my prior CL63 030 or current 65); I never do aggressive launches from 0MPH but do lots of aggressive mid-range accel and mtn twisties fun driving on wkends

Would only get factory-spec tires (Conti or Yokos) that have been calibrated/engineered vs AMG CL chassis set-up (and wt)

Many revered tire brands/models like PS2, though respected for dynamics on various cars like 3600lb 997TT, may not be optimal vs ~5000lb CL63/65 chassis set-up/wt

i'm not a stickler for detail like WSH is (meaning i would rock whatever tire i think is best, not just the oe ones), but if the load ratings are similar, then go for it.

that is not unusual mileage for the OEM tires (given that this is my DD and I am not racing from stoplight to stoplight I think 7500 miles is pathetic for this car) , my mileage was similar. i did not put on the oem replacements, wanted better mileage and I think there are better tires out there. as long as load rating is right, many good options. I will probably try the dunlop or hankooks next as I am putting on 15k miles per year.

Your are absolutely correct. I have 3 bubbles on my front PS2's in less then a few months. I did not experience such problems with the Conti's, not to mention that the ps2 was more expensive

I drive a 08 CL63 030 with 19000 miles. These are 20" contis so maybe a liitle different than 19s.

First set was good for 12000 miles and maybe after 9000 felt some slip. Second set at 7000 miles with no problems to date.

btw the weather here in Boston has been absolutely awful but when it rarely clears the car is a total blast. I have a Renntech ecu and it is tres formidable.

Yes, I have the 030 wheels as well (not 010 as I originally posted). Thanks for the info.

Can you tell me more about the Renntech ecu? Where do you go to get it? How noticeable is the difference? Does it void warranty? When I bring the CL in for service, do I need to worry?

Renntech is accepted and warrantied by Mercedes-Benz. You have nothing to worry about.

My MB dealer arranged for the Renntech ecu reprogram. Total turn around time was 3 days. What they do is open up the upper range on parameters to max performance. Warranty is no affected.

Very noticeable performance increase. M mode with abs off is totally off the wall. I think that they claim 25-40 on both hp and torque. I've driven CL65 and 63 with Renntech ecu no difference. I can't comment on top end because I don't drive > 100 mph but in typical speed range nothing beats it, Have never lost a challenge.

Just taken Michelin PS2 off my S600 after only 7k. I have put Bridgstone on
but have not driven it yet, will comment on them later.

I have the Hankooks, they last longer. I had the Perelli before and only lasted about 15K for the rear and 30K for the front. The other difference is that the Perellii's handle a lot better. They stick to the road.

So did you purchase the Hankook's or PS2? Any reviews?

Good point, but the major gating factors, all other things being equal are the W speed rating and the XL or extreme load rating to compensate for the weight of the car at (autobahn) speeds. The latter is the safety factor AMG, Wsh, and moi require for safety and peace of mind!

I finally gave up on the PS2's on my car (SL55 with stage 4 Renntech) and purchased the Hankooks. So far I have been very pleased and in my opinion the Hankooks are a hell of a lot better than the PS2's at half the price.

Thanks for the update. I guess I'll go with the Hankook on my CL550. If anyone think it's a bad decision please let me know.

UH no!

Where do people get this BS.

What most likely is the case here is, your specific dealer has an agreement with Renntech where Renntech warranties and pays for any failures due to the ECU.

Btw, I love Renntech and they had super reliable products and warranty/support for my vehicle.
