2005 cl55 20x11 rears??
post some pics of the wheels...
If you run 305 (mm), it will be some what even although in my opinion, the best combo for 11" wheels would be 315 tires. 285 or 295 will stress the tires a bit (look kinda "donk" in my opinion but some might like it) not to mention you will scratch your rims much more easier since you have no protection although 285 helps a little with the rubbing issue.
If you have aggressive offset and not lower your car, it might be ok but your wheels will stick out too much.
I have 10" with 275 and "medium" lower and it already rub (left rear) from time to time (on medium to big dips). Let us know how it goes and post pics if you could.

After the initial rubbing, for whatever reason it happened less and less. Now, on the third set of tires, it rarely rubs. The rubbing never caused any noticeable damage to the tires. Now on freeways it hardly ever rubs anymore, only in the worst of situations (such as a metal plate over a construction pit) and only the worst of dips and parking lot gutters. From my own personal experience having the 10.5 inch 305 setup running strong for over 30000+ miles, I would say SLCL overstated the rubbing.
My rims are 10.5 inches, and yes the 305s are just over 1 foot wide. They still fit up inside the fender but this seems to be the upper limit. I don't think 315s would be possible. On your 11 inch wheels, though, I would stay away from 285 or 295, as SLCL suggested. If they work for you, you can finally be the second person I know with 305s on the 215 body CL.

As you stated yourself, you have 10.5. Adding an extra 0.5 inch would be totally another story.
The is a piece of medal on the inside rear wheel well where the body connects to the rear bumper (on both LR and RR). You can put your fingers and and feel it. Why did Mercedes design such a bad thing (as it was not on my SL)?
With rubbing issue, I seem to have it on the left rear (for just about any mercedes I have if I run wider tire or lower too much). What side did your rub?
BTW, did you manage to sell your car Patentmat? Very nice interior I must say. What are you getting now?
I had offers come in for the car up to $24000, and it had 88K on the clock, but I just couldn't do it. So the car remains all mine for now : )

Have 285/30/20's on S55 and had 275/35/20's before, and they both rub on bumps, like a medium to big bump, fine on smaller ones. nothing too bad though.
and on my CL have 275/35/20's and it does rub on tiny bumps, may go to 285/30/20's next time around
