Widest Tire Size for Rear cl65/55?

Anyone know how wide I can go in the rear before I rub?

Stock on a 2005 CL65 is 275/35/19 in the rear.
Can I go with a 305/30/19?

Anyone have wider then stock tires on their cl65/cl55?
Any recommendations in sizes?

I really like the Michelin Sport PS2 so far..

Thanks
-N

Yes, you can I put those one my stock wheels (I had them left over from my GT3), they stick out a bit and slight rubbing on the right inside rear. After they wore out, I went back to OEM size. It seems to drive the best with OEM size on PS2's.

Update:

I went safer and went 285 35 19 in the rear, no rubbing yet.
Picked up a nice pair of PS2s close to 97% for less then half the cost of new PS2s..

All I can say is wow, alot better since the rear pair was close to bald.

Now I'm working on finding 255 40 19's for the fronts..

I have had 305/25s on my 2004 CL55 for about 3 and a half years now. See pics in the signature, or the one I just attached to try to show them NOT sticking out. On the CL55 (or at least on mine) they don't stick out if you have the right wheels. I don't know the offset on mine, but because Brabus made them for the car, they just work. Cost a little extra but worth it.

Because the car is lowered, I needed them to fit entirely inside the fender. I don't remember the exact post but I recall the 215 CL65 actually having less room for wider tires than the CL55, so I'm pretty sure just as Trakcar stated they would indeed stick out on the CL65. The CL65 is more car and simply has less room back there to squeeze in wide tires.

Years ago when I first posted about the 305s, the rubbing would occur on the freeway on large undulations, maybe every 10-20 miles for just a fraction of a second. Since that time (and over about 50,000 miles) it has happened less and less. Now it never rubs on the freeway and in fact hardly ever happens at all, unless I bomb into a parking lot or over a speedbump. In those instances (or for going up and down the streets of San Francisco), I simply raise the car with the button on the dash. I couldn't be happier with the setup.

I was waiting for you to chime in, you have been the pioneer with the 305's for the longest time. I think the key word you mentioned is the offsets. If they cannot be maintained by the rim or with spacers then the concern for rubbing is greater. As far as the cl65 compared to other 215s, I understand it has longer axles which requires a different offset(a flatter faced wheel with very little lip to prevent it from sticking past the body). I was interested in using 305 drag radials when they come out, with spacers if needed to prevent inside rubbing. the big question is if they don't tuck in the wheel well based on the rim and the raised abc fails, the plastic quarters will get chewed up if the car squats. So I don't think its worth the risk with all things considered for me and a cl65. However your cars stance is absolutely perfect, I hope you don't get tired of it, it will be tough to top!

So some say they rub others have no rubbing and I was wondering if the reason Patentmat doesn't have rubbing is because he has 20" wheels running 305/25/20s as opposed to a 30 or 35 sidewall. There is probably very little if any sidewall flex on that low of a profile to rub, but again offsets are the key. As far as the drag radials, to me its pointless without some sidewall flex.

When the tire hits the strut and also extends past the fender, offset really isn't the issue. It's the width of the tire that is the issue.

Good point. If the overal buldge starts to stick way out to prevent inside rubbing your right its not worth it and its nothing a different offset can correct. No need to drive a CL like its a Jeep, not my style.

I bought a set of the Titanium AMG Two Piece wheels that came off a CL65. The rear offset for a CL55 is 46, what i did not realise was the offset for a 65 is 60 so i had to put 15mm spacers on the rear. I have 275/35/19 PS2's, so with the spacers i wonder what i could get away with without rubbing ?

Well, I found it it does rub a bit only when I go over a dip in the road.
It's a Cl65 with 285 35 19's.. with suspension set to normal.. one led lit.

Just slightly on the left driver side rear. It sounds like its happening somewhere near the inner fender. I'll try it with suspension set to two led's.

Since it doesn't happen that often, I'll take the wheel off this weekend to see if there are any marks.

Any update on what you found with this. I'm considering 285 S-04 Pole Positions for my CL65 on stock rims and want to make sure I don't have any issues.

It always rubs left rear with 285s (I have 285/30 on 20 inch). I have seen other posts. Let us know when you find out where it rubs. Thx
