Just changed mine today. Took about 45 minutes in total. Very easy.

Ramp or jack stand the car.
Wheels don't need to come off.
Remove under tray.
Pump is on passenger side behind fog light.
Two coolant hoses, plug, vacuum line.
Bleed system (very easy on V12 to access the bleed nipples on the IC and bleed until water comes out while filling the reservoir. Not sure on the V8 kompressor).

Bosch part 0392022003 (note ends in 03) is the old pump and tends to break.
Johnson CM30 is one option to replace. It flows more and uses a magnetic design so apparently lasts longer. Except it requires rewiring, a new bracket, and apparently also breaks often.
Bosch part 0392022010 (note ends in 10) is the new revision (hence the 10 instead of 3). It flows more than the original and about the same as the Johnson, from what I gather. It is also meant to be more reliable. And it uses factory wiring and bracket, so it's totally plug and play. You can get it here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ht_3200wt_1167

No more lag when heat soaked. It just pounds like a freight train every time.

We just pinch-clamped the hoses so we didn't lose any fluid. Easy install. Everything is easy to get to and obvious. Good confidence builder.

I used those plastic spring clamps. They don't pinch hard enough. I took a little bath, but that happens every time I work with coolant, so I was fine with it. You have to refill anyway, so it's not a big deal. But if you have proper hose clamps, it would help.

Anyone have the model number for the 03 CL55 or is it the same?

When i look up the supplied part number it doesn't list the CL55 as a compatible model?

I will replace this next weekend, thanks in advance!

They are the same. Exotic-metal55 gave me the link and helped me put it on. It is the same one he put on his car which is an 03 CL55.

I think this same pump is in virtually every gasoline Mercedes with forced induction. The 32/55k/600/65 motors all seem to use it, across the C/E/SL/CL/S class.

Sorry, Newb question:

How do you guys know it needs to be replaced? Or it just needs to be done anyhow?

When I bought my CL65 last year, the mechanic mentioned it had been replaced already so it's relatively new, but I"m not 100% sure.

Thanks

Nevermind, I just read to first message of this thread. I guess the key is to watch it 15+ above ambient.. I'll use my Android Torque App with bluetooth odbc tongle to find out.

Does the motor keep running if I turn off the engine but still have the key in or not? So I can go see if the pump is running?

Actually, with the motor running you can just put your hand on it and tell whether it is running or not (according to Exotic-metal55. He grabbed mine and told me it was dead, but that was after we used one of those code readers to check the temps).

Great thread

Love the idea of a plug and play Bosch pump with 3x flow.

Remember if the intake air is cooler hence denser hence why use a pulley until you do the Bosch pump?

I wasn't aware it had increase flow over stock. How do we know that? As mine was out when I bought the car, I have nothing to compare it to. Also, since the ambient has been sooooo high here, I still haven't experienced a cool air pull even once.

You can listen for the pump or feel it. However, that is not 100% conclusive. It may still be running, for example, but the rotor can be shot so it isn't actually pumping anything.

On the V12 it is very easy to test. Open the bleed valve on one of the intercoolers. Press the needle inside (like a tire valve). If it doesn't do anything, the pump is not working (or there is air in the system, but it should eventually leak fluid). If it leaks fluid, the pump is working.

Yeah, I think someone recently installed that on their CL. It's popular with the E55 guys, too.

Saintz, without your awesome posts it would be a little harder to love the Beast

Blew two out from reading all these johnson lovers post, before I did my own test. I have taken them apart and posted the info in the past. They suck! Once I saw the design, I knew I had been had! The Bosch HD from siliconboost is a good pump and most of the non magnetic drives are too but require some fit mods.
Hello, I know this is an old post, but do you still stand by your words saying Johnson CM30 IC pump sucks? YOu still recommend the updated Bosch 010 IC Pump?

Yes, the Johnson CM30 definitely sucks. The CM90 is much better. See the thread below.

Thanks for that detailed research you compiled up for the pumps, very informative. But since I'm running stock equipment why do I need such a powerful IC pump as the CM90? A lot of ppl saying different views on this topic of what pump to use and what not I may just have to do a trial and error to find out myself whats best for me in the end

The simple answer is just to use a stock pump that works, preferably the -010 version.

I swapped mine with Bosch as per and it’s incredible!

bought the car with a failed pump and or improper intercooler bleed. Swapped the pumps. The car Already had the new style original “improved” pump. Took car to dealer since I had all my tools packed to move. Holy Mac what a difference! You absolutely have to make sure you have the coolant bleed done right.
