Question CL65 alternator help

Well, the 1st issue has arisen with my CL. I knew it was there, but you can hear the bearings alot more now. The OEM replacement is about $1,300. I wouldn't mind just having it rebuilt but if not, replaced. Anyone have any leads on rebuilders or better costs on a new/reman alternator for an 05 CL65?

i wouldnt touch it until it really breaks.

you can never tell the eta of a bearing by its noise. some are quiet and go on a moment notice, others a noisy and stay so for 100k miles.

I know, I just hate my car with that sound! Plus I don't want to be stranded. Likely I'll just wait until it fails. It won't really do any harm to do that (unlike a water pump).

I wouldn't wait, a noisy bearing is saying i'm ready to die. I don't know who can fix it, but thats not a difficult job for electric motor generator repair shops.

if the alternator bearing goes out, there is a chance of the alternator seizing and locking up which could rip your main belt off and you wont have a belt to drive your water pump, power steering, etc etc.. it happened to my BMW, and i have seen it happen to older Mercedes... now would it happen in your case? your guess it good as mine, but if it does lock up that main belt will be flying off your engine in a heart beat and your not going to have power steering ( if it is belt driven)

Yeah, that's my real concern. Not so much any damage, but being stranded. I travel alot and I don't need that. Guess I'll park the CL and drive the GL for a while. Wife won't like it...lol However, I'm looking at either having mine rebuilt or buying a reman. Will the CL600 alternator work in the 65? I thought most of the bolt-ons are identical (as well as the block).

Turns out it was neither my alternator nor my PS pump that failed on Klaus. It was a simple guide pulley. I'm actually going to replace all 3 guide pulleys and the timing belt tensioner while they are in there. Might as well.

It is $850 for all the work at an indy. The actual #3 guide pulley is plastic and are prone to fail so I thought it wise to get all 3 done. They are a known problem and there is actually a TSB out on it. Wish they were better built, but I'm not *****ing as it wasn't anything major!

haha.. yes - the guide pulleys are plastic and they will seize. i've seen a few do it. the whole pulley looks like a melted plastic blob when all is said and done.

Got it back today and it is perfect. Indy was kind enough to show me the parts he replaced (that made me feel good, versus him just saying he replaced the parts). Just bought a Passport 8500 to replace my old radar detector and it's on!!
