Sold GT-R and considering a CL63 or 65

Hey there everyone,

Been a while since I have been on here. I have owned two previous AMG cars, both E55's. Had a 2009 GT-R for the last two years, and with some decent mod's the car was a rocket, and a blast to drive.

I was given an offer I couldn't refuse, so I let the car go. Now the fun begins with a winter long search for my new ride.

I would like to pick up another AMG car, perferably a 2008 CL65 or even an S65. But, my concern is daily drivability and cost of ownership as opposed to the 63.

I didn't daily the GT-R and the high cost of ownership didn't affect me all that bad, but I have had cars in the past that have been expensive to maintain, given putting 10,000 miles a year on them.

My questions are:

What type of yearly expenses are you guys seeing on the 65's....IE, scheduled maintenance, brakes, etc.

Are they that much less dropping down to the 63's?

I know the car's aren't as fast as a modified GT-R in stock form, but with mild upgrades such as a tune and maybe exhaust, what types of 1/4 mile times and trap speeds are you guys seeing.

Thanks,

Kevin

My CL63 has cost very little to own and operate. I have only done the scheduled maintenance and oil changes which are a few hundred bucks or so every 12,000miles. I finally had to replace the front and rear pads at 26,000 miles (about $1,000) which amazed me as I dont baby the car when behind the wheel.

I have been actively pursuing a W215 CL65 recently, but just this week switched gears! to looking at the W216 models, CL600 and CL63's because the CL63's have dropped in price recently. I guess the '09's are coming off lease and there are dozens for sale less than $70K, even saw a stunning '09 CL63 with P2 for <70K here in Fort Lauderdale this week. If you want AMG, there is a lot of inventory in the 63's very few 65's, but a few good deals even on those.
I found an '08 CL600 that fits my needs and am going that way as I can boost it later with Speedriven et al if I want AMG perf down the road.
Even though I love the W215, I am going with the 216 because they all come with the options included, and no hydraulic ABC, etc.
I am getting old and the distronic/parktronic/backup/nightvision are needed these days :-)

I definitely want to get into a W216 body car. I would prefer the CL65 for the upgraded performance, mod friendly engine, and the diamond stitch interior. But, the CL63's are so much less expensive, they are hard to turn away.

I know, I definitely want a V12, but the 63 AMG's are such deals, was tough to decide.
But already started to see a softening in the 65's, one in CA and one out here that are heading below $90K with very few miles.....

Other thoughts, more 63's built, easier and less expensive to maintain, but less resale value, hence why they are dropping.
Much fewer V12's produced, so higher maintenance and just more cylinders to feed and maintain, but more exclusive and rare, so maybe better resale.
but given Benz has discontinued most 63's and turned them into biturbo 5.5l but still calling them 63's, maybe the big V-8's will hold their value once people realize this?
Guess it depends how well the 5.5l turbos performs, which I expect will be fabulous. Plus able to mod them much easier than a 63NA.

You may want to check that again. The 216 CL600, 63, and 65 have ABC supension but the new CL550 has airmatic.

Ouch, will check again, guess the post I read was wrong. Well, let's hope they have made some improvements to the system since the W215. should have been a learning adventure for MB with all the warranty fixes.

I had two previous E55's, so I don't want another, even though they are totally new. I want to go with a big body car....preferrably a V12. I have never owned a V12 car, so thats what I am shooting for, just not sure if I will be able to swing the price tag in the spring. I want to be sub $80k. I love to mod cars, and I think thats the major drawback to the 63 engine.
Anyone know of guys that have modified their 65's and have run them at the dragstrip? Very interested in knowing what they are running and trapping.

The problem with the W216 (and W221 for that matter) is the weight gain from the previous model. The W215 CL65 (I had one) weighed around 4,650lbs ... without driver/passengers. The W216 CL65 weighs in at a porky 4,950lbs. I haven't driven the W216 CL65... but the last thing my CL65 needed was another 300lbs of weight. The W216's are rated the same hp as the W215's...so the power-to-weight ratio went down. There are tuned W215 CL65s running anywhere from SGC's RENNtech tuned (with prototype parts) 10.2 @ 137+mph to my former Kleemann ECU tuned CL65 running 11.209 @ 123.7mph on drag radials. There are no times that I have seen for a W216 CL65...let alone a tuned W216 CL65. I would have to think that the W216 will be slower than a comparably modded W215 given the weight differential.
