SLR Shift Knob Retrofit

Can this be done. I called the dealer; $2,700 for the knob and boot.
I'll embark on this and would love to get it done.
SLR Shift Knob Retrofit-mclaren-slr-51.jpg

I do have Push Start. I know the shifter comes off pretty easily and there is a pin the pushes the ignition when you press the button. I'd imagine the SLR is set up basically the same? The leather boot would have to come off of the SLR knob. But the gear box is essentially set up the same visually without the boot, just like in the SL models as well.
I was wondering, do you think this would work, any hope to this?

This is just a personal mod only really to make me happy lol. I know there's no point to it, its silly and expensive, but it would be so badass and I really love my car. But I'd love it even more turning the car on like a fighter pilot every morning

So Boss! I wish I knew. I'd pay $2,700 if I know it'll work. We have a silver arrow SL at the house and the center console is basically set up like the SLR. I'm gonna take the shifter off of it and try to put it in my CL. If it works, I'm buying that shifter!

Great idea, expensive, but very nice.

I was thinking the other day if the SLR steering wheel would fit w215.

That would be nice too with the shifter.

I had this exact same idea though I have an SL600, from what I've learned it'll retrofit into my SL, but even though I'm closer in DNA it wont have the back lighting in RED Deal breaker for me as it NEEDS more pizzazz vs my current Carbon Fiber keyless-go knob..

GL perhaps you'll get it ALL to work, I really don't know & price of entry is far too much to find out NONE of it works etc..(I was told it'll prolly start the car but nothing else by my MB mech as he's seen both cars & said Power source for light isn't present on the SL, I'd assume same for the CL?)

Ok, if I get the SL knob to work on the CL, then I know the SLR knob will work on the CL and that is progress already and worth getting to me. Getting it to light, that I can worry about when I get there. I know a cool lighting guy that really knows his way around some wires... Because if him, I now have Maybach style running lights in my side mirrors that also act as turn signals/hazards
One question, does the red ring on the SLR knob always stay lit or turned on? I imagine that thing lights up before you turn the car on, right?

It can. I fit our '11 SL shifter today (folded the boot up, took off the CL shifter) into my W215 and it worked perfectly. So what did I do when I found out it'll work? Exactly what post #10 says, daddy got himself an SLR shift knob. I went to my local Mercedes-Benz dealer and gave parts guy the VIN of an SLR and asked for the shifter (shifter and boot come as a package and it's part no. 199-260-02-40-9B97 in case anyone else is interested) and $2,628.80 later I got a receipt for an SLR knob
Worth it? I can't say yet, never received the part, they said itll arrive in about a week since it's coming from Deutschland. But little stuff like this makes me happy so why not, I'm still young. All I know is the SLR has one of the coolest, if not coolest, shift knobs I've ever seen since it came out. And now so will my CL, or should I say CLR
And I don't know if it will light up red when I flip up the missile launcher cap, but with little things like that you can always find a solution.

2006 W215. Has the same knob as the CL shifter in my first post with Push to Start.

I was thinking now. For the red illuminated ring, there's has to be some wire or line from the shifter that connects that part to give it that glow. As Thericker said about the SL it needs a power source. Well the center part of the W215 must have a power source somewhere seeing as the P, R, N, D - +, M C/S letters by the shifter all light up. There has to be a way you can tap into a wire underneath the housing. The problem is, when the knob and chrome twist clip end on the CL, you see the long metal rod. It would look butched up having a wire dangle. So I'm thinking, it might be cool to get a custom boot made for it, have all the letter area cut out nice along with the manual/sport/comfort button and then have the wire or whatever it is all inside the boot. Just doing some forward thinking to get the most out of this

How does the push button start factor in? Is it a hard procedure with this involved?

Will do
CL is coming together nicely, have a few more 1 off custom stuff going on, slowly but surely.
Its the exact same pin on all those cars attached the silver metal rod. I guess all the shift knobs with the push start button work on the same pins and principle (at least for the S, SL, CL, SLR, Maybach)

I see and how are you thinking of incorporating the boot into this? I have always wanted to change the shifter in the CL I think it looks old and outdated compared to an SL.

I was thinking of incorporating the boot around the chrome trim of the W215

And then just cut and taper around the glossy black area where the P, R, D, N, M C/S button so you'd only see that around the boot. If that doesn't end up working right, I'll just have to settle with the SLR knob sitting on the chrome rod like it does on the stock W215 shifter

So the Mercedes dealer called me and told me my shift knob came in. Went there, picked up. Such a heavy piece. At least 3 times heavier than a plain push start shifter. I got so excited to put it in, I couldn't wait. Finally all this time speculating whether it could work would be answered. So I get to my car and take the stock one off. Took the SLR knob out the box and connected it to the metal shift rod on the CL. Flipped the cap up (fighter SR-71 style) Pressed the button, and that b*tch turned right the f*ck on! Then I started look at it all happy and everything. Then, to my surprise, I see a little red ring glowing, mind you this is in the day time and it was pretty bright today. So now not only does the SLR shifter turn the car on, it has the illuminated ring around it bout to take pics of it

And you don't need a power source for the light like Thericker and his tech said, straight up plug and play
