Tires for 2011 CL63 AMG
I need to replace Continental SportContact 2's. A bit underwhelmed with them. Had Michelin PilotSport PS2 on earlier CL550 and, as I recall, got slightly better mileage -- ride seemed about the same.
I'm not that well versed in the pros and cons of different tires so I'd be grateful if anyone has suggestions/advice about any tire I should consider? Thanks............

Did I say anything about price, smartass? Maybe you ought to STFU and go practice your reading skills.
Thanks for your helpful comment weasel_atty.

I agree with this statement. They might not be as sticky as the Michelin PSS, but they are the best bang for the buck and it performs well.
I have a set on my CL55 right now and I love them. My only complaint is that they wear down kinda fast....

I just put Continental DWs on my '08 CL63 and am pleased so far, particularly at $1100 or s for the set with Road Hazard included (I got to use that benefit less than 24 hours later).
That said my little bit of research suggested that Michelin's new PSS is just superior to everything else out there, albeit for quite a bit more $. With my elderly (33) driving these days I just didn't need that. Subsequent magazine comparos confirm its superiority.

The OP didn't say anything about cost. But his wasn't the only post in the thread. It was simply a smartass response to the first response to his post, which was "get Hankooks, they are better and cheaper." Here, you want a polite reply?
Hankooks may be cheaper, but they are no way better than Pzeros. I will assume that since you are driving a pretty expensive rig, the cost is immaterial. So, with all due respect, don't bother with Hankooks. Buy the Pirellis, enjoy the driving experience, and prepare to get new shoes every, I don't know, 8,000 miles. But they are the best tires I have driven.
Forgot I was dealing with people that have a lot of money and aren't used to people having a bit of fun at their expense.

Let's advance the conversation. Are you looking for the best "bang for the buck" tire? Or are you looking for the best tire? Because there is a difference. To me the CL in AMG trim is a "no compromise" kind of machine. Others don't think so. They trade performance for mileage and cost. I trade money for performance. You have to make your own choice - what is your goal.
Gotta be either Pzeros or as Guilty said Michelin Pilot Super Sport for me.
A lawyer agreeing with someone using Guilty as a handle. I guess that was inevitable.

Impressed you took the high road.
Decided to go with the Michelins (as I have liked their performance in the past) but may look hard at the Pirellis next time.
I appreciate your input. Thx.

The Pilot Super Sports? Post a review after you have had them for a while. The Pirelli Pzero Corsa System may be a *bit* extreme for the street, and I may look to the Pilot Super Sports next time. The Corsas are pretty nice on a track day though.

I have to agree with you regarding the Conti DWs. I put a set on my 09 CL63 and they perform much better in the wet than the OEM Conti Sport Contacts. They are a little less sharp with turn in and cornering in the dry than the Sport Contacts but that was a trade off I was willing to deal with to make my life a bit easier in wet winters of NY. At age 48 this car is my daily driver and trip car and I don't really need the extra performance provided by Michelins or Pirellis. If you really need more grip then the stock Contis you should probably be driving a C63 or E63 because thats not what the CL63 is all about.

My problem with the E is that once you have spent any time in Germany, where practically every taxi is a brand new E class, I'd feel like I just spent a bunch of money on a really powerful Checker (no offense intended to you E63 drivers, just my opinion).
The CL is a hoot on the track, don't kid yourself. Accelerates out of turns like the understated exotic that it is. It's no SLS, but then what is? The CLS was also pretty sweet on the track. And a pretty nice ride. I just couldn't get over having four doors. But I like it. But even on the street, almost every time I have tried a less aggressive tire on my CL I have the traction control kicking in too much for my liking. It doesn't do me any good to have all this torque if I can't get it to the ground without my German nanny wagging her little yellow triangular finger at me.
If I didn't have little kids, I'd have an R230 SL55 or SL63. With Corsas.

I have Pilot Super Sports all around on my SL 55....and they really do seem to be the best tires I've ever driven on...even better than the PZero's....and even with the Eurocharged upgrades I have on my car they still hook up so well its very impressive.....just superb tires...Discount Tire gave me a pretty good deal on them with the extra full coverage warranty ....

I ended up going with Conti DWs as seen a year ago in the thread. I've got close to 20k in them ad I've been pleased. Don't need anything more aggressive and never wanted for anything different along the way.
I recently ordered a replacement set of DWs rom Tirerack for around $900 so they've gotten to be an even better deal since the first. Time around. Rears are pretty well used up as expected but fronts have life.

Has anyone considered michelin new AS3's.?
It may be all season, but the initial tests are encouraging, very fast, quiet and will last twice as long asPSS. We have alot of wet roads here so I think of it as a safety factor as well.

not going to get Mich next time
I know you guys are talking CL63's but I will tell you, on my 05 65, I have the PS tires on mine and I have noticed, and had several car guys tell me that these tires cup and shred soooo bad on our cars. I can see it on all four tires and they don't even have 8k on them, and I drive fairly easy on the car (no just power brake/tire smoking stuff). So i've had people tell me to get pretty much anything but the PS when I swap them out. They're quiet, grip pretty well for a car as big as a boat as mine, but if you saw the sides of them you'd be shocked by the wear.
