CL600 - CL65 engine difference

I have seen a CL600 that was "upgraded" to CL65 for sale for a few weeks now. (http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...nal&listType=3) Knowing this was in all likelyhood a "badge" upgrade and nothing more, I did call the owner/seller.

What is the easiest way to spot the engine difference?

The owner does not know anything, the car is as he purchased it. He did indicate there might be a problem with the agc pump as he stated it would cost $1200 and he would adjust the price accordingly. On the off chance an earlier owner did put a real CL65 engine in I hate to pass this up.

Well considering its a 2001, it won't have a twin turbo V12. If he truly swapped the AMG Twin Turbo V12 in it, one, it would of cost him a fortune and two, he wouldn't be selling if for this cheap. Take a picture of the engine bay and post it here.

A cosmetic clone (without the front and rear bumper or brakes). Nothing more, nothing less.

Looks like a 2001 CL sport with 65 wheels. Big diff between a 01-02 v12 and 03-06 v12tt

I know the standard CL600 is very different. However, it could be possible to swap the engine and control electronics from a totaled CL65 (some must have been totaled by now). Changes (probably only cosmetic) were done by an earlier owner, so this guy really doesn't know anything. I will try to see it this next week as it is only 1/2 an hour away. I will take pictures of the engine bay if it does not stand out as being a stock 600. How hard is it to see the turbos and plumbing on this?

Run away. I don't think it is possible to have an ABC pump changed for $1,200. Could be a miriad of problems and may need a new pump, shocks, accumulators, hoses, ETC, ETC. You could easily reach $10k at the dealership depending on what is wrong.

Don't ever buy a 2000+ CL with ABC problems. You want one that has all of that replaced. Let someone else bear the expense of getting the ABC maintence up to date.

The turbo V12's had intercoolers on the tops of them. When you take the engine cover off you will see two big squares towards the fire wall; one on each side mounted to the motor. That's a dead give away.

Thanks, that is the info I was looking for.

Others have mentioned run away from suspension problems. I do understand that those problems can easily run into big bucks. A great system when it works but many possible problems and big sums of money to get right sometimes (especially from a dealer). I would only be interested if it had the AMG engine though.
