Dealer says my Cell Phone is killing my car!

The dealer says that even though my HTC Droid DNA phone worked with the official Mercedes Bluetooth dongle for months, that it is somehow suddenly incompatible with the car
and that is what is causing the following problem:
1. Get in car and phone connects by Bluetooth automatically, just like it should.
2. Make or receive a call, and everything is fine.
3. After the call is over, the car (not my phone) makes a call to “unknown” and connects and the timer starts running.
4. Hit END (on the dash) and the call ends, but in 4 seconds it starts another call to “unknown” and connects to nothing again.
The phones shows it isn’t involved in the call, and turning off the phone won’t stop the process.![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
Shutting off the Bluetooth dongle won’t stop the process.
Shutting off the car won’t stop the process.
Leaving the car and locking it won’t stop the process.
Hitting END and jumping out of the car and slamming the door and locking it, won’t stop the process.
The call stays connected and the Comand system stays on and engaged UNTIL IT DRAINS THE BATTERY.![EEK!](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Additional facts for diagnosers:
One early time I went out and checked it and there was a dash message saying it would kill the system in an hour and a half if I didn’t take some action. Which it did and so the battery didn’t die that time.
One time I wasn’t on a phone call, but just had the radio running, and parked and locked the car and came back in about an hour and the radio was still running in the car. So that wouldn’t shut off either. But that just happened once.![Confused](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
One time after they charged the battery and reset everything it threw a bunch of codes and they had to replace the primary computer module that allows all the other computers to talk to each other. That didn’t solve the problem.
Every time it dies, they reset everything and then tell me they can’t get it to do it. The just had it for two weeks and essentially gave up and told me not to use my phone on Bluetooth.![wall](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/banghead.gif)
They have previously replaced parts of the Comand system a couple of times to fix the navigation function.![poke](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/stickpoke.gif)
Any ideas?
My extended warranty is still good, at least until July.

Jhouse- this exact problem happened to me. Its your phone. I had an older Blackberry and I had to do a hard reboot by pulling the battery. After I did that, it worked flawlessly. I haven't tried it since (car had been parked for 6 months due to winter). I have the new 9900 Blackberry and have yet to pair it to the car. My wife's IPhone 4 had no problems.

So the phone must send some very confusing commands to the Comand unit, huh?
I'm still stumped by why it was fine for so long. And then caught a cold.
They've hard booted me a few times now. But it keeps coming back.
So I guess we need a poll to make sure new phones work before we upgrade.
There goes $600 down the drain.

i think it would be extremely helpful if members listed the newer phones that work with the puck. don't want to encounter a problem.

Poor man's solution
I just use the cell phone (with a charger) and a Bluetooth headset.
JHouse, you might want to add this to SKYLAW's thread about phone compatibility in the Tech section. He may have some helpful ideas.
Biker349, that column would be a good place to share the info.
Aren't you looking forward to the sensor controlled Droid cars of the future!

OK, thanks. I found the approved list, and of course, there isn't a phone on there that post dates the Civil War (except for Apple). So it's back to the poll idea.

It happens every blue moon on my car too. Just take the battery out of the phone and re-insert. If that doesn't work, unplug the bluetooth dongle from the car and then erase the phone's memory of the MB phone system and re-program. Should work fine. If it happens again in a few months, just go through the process again.

JHouse, my car has done the same thing several times. I replace the bluetooth puck. One that is connected to the system. Not a puck in the phone cradle. That, and a replacement Motorola Atrix (old Atrix 1) seems to work OK, but it does spontaneously disconnect and reconnect. My dealership (who I have a great relationship with the shop foreman) told me that these earlier models (mine's an 04) have a combination analog/digital system that is quite squirrely. Good luck with a new puck, and keep us posted. J

Well thanks guys. At least it isn't magic. But every time it happens I can't make it stop. So I'm cooked unless I can drive to the dealer. So I don't think I want to gamble on seeing if it happens again.
My wife's Navigator has some screwed up logic in the electronics that always required a reset of the entire electronic system, so I put one of those easy detach screw down switches on the battery so I could "reboot" the car when needed. And that works. I'm not sure I'm that desperate to have the phone work via Bluetooth in the Merc though.

Just wanted to update this thread. I have the new Blackberry Z10 and I successfully paired it with the Mercedes blue tooth puck. I made a call from it and everything works as it should.
