Reduced performance / Limp Home Mode... Why?

Reduced performance / Limp Home Mode... Why?
So it's cold here now, but I let the car warm up pretty well... Everything was fine until I hit the gas coming out of a left turn lane and "Check Engine" and ran like it was on 6 cylinders... I know that it is the "limp home" or reduced performance mode, but I was curious to know if there are some common things to look for?
I am wondering since I was on a 1/4 tank, did it misfire on some crap gas? I'd hate to take it in and have to just reset the computer or something or worse, have it throw a false code based on nothing.
Against my better judgment I did try to do the battery reset, but didn't leave it disconnected very long and as soon as the car started, the CEL came back.
Seems to be a sensor, but considering I was turning and at the end of the turn hit the gas somewhat spiritedly, anyone have any suggestions or just take the thing in?
Normally I'd just take it in, but I have a crap schedule this weekend and really didn't want to have to deal with car rentals.

Most common cause is misfire. If low on fuel coming out of a long hard sweeper at high speed you could momentarily starve the fuel pump when low on fuel (trust me on this). I would reccommend getting it scanned to be sure before deleting the code with a battery disconnect.

Based on your description of the symptoms, you will need a new coil pack. Stay away from remanufactured ones.
