AMG Seat Emblem

My drivers side AMG Seat emblem fell off today. One of the metal/aluminum legs that old it in broke right off at the base.

Wonder if the dealer can order this part separately and install it without opening the seat up or if they will be ordering me a whole new drivers seat.....

On second thought they would probably just order a new upper leather skin.

I actually took a look at the seat today. Once the rear of the seat is removed (2 torx screws and 2 elastic straps to undo), you can clearly see how to remove the leather skin.

Therefore, it would be the same amount of work to order the emblem and remove the skin, install the emblem then replace the skin as it would to order a whole new skin and remove/replace.

Same amount of work one way or another. My guess is they will order the emblem if it is available.

My driver's seatback emblem detached from one end last summer. I believe that they just replaced the emblem, not the seatback. I noticed that the passenger side emblem was a bit askew the other day, but it went back into place easily. Problem is that if a loose-knit sweater or sume such garment snags the emblem it is likely to either break off or get skewed off center. An obviously poorly designed peice. Of course, we have all experienced the problems with the seatbacks snapping back into place when they are forward and one is reaching into the back seat to get something. Far as I can tell the emblem and the snap-back problem on the heavy seatback is the only design flaw on the car. I do not know if it has gotten any attention or if a tech bulletin establishing any fix has been issued. One should be very careful if the seatback is forward.

I've nearly been knocked out by the chair a couple of times. Definitely a flaw that just becomes annoying.

Victoryroad, do you remeber how long they had your car for in order to replace the emblem ?

I assume they needed to order the emblem and didn't have it in stock.

My recollection is that they ordered the part and called me when it arrived. They had the car less than a day. Most parts, if not available in the US take about a week to arrive from Germany, unless they must be shipped via surface, such as any with pyrotechnic devices such as those components in the seat belt system.

There were no seat emblems in the U.S. Had to order one from Germany. Should be here this week. I'm interested to see how they are going to install it.

Yeah, make sure to keep a close eye on them. They might just resort to Krazy Glue.

Hate to say it Andrew, but the fastening system used for the emblems is obviously faulty, so crazy glue might actually be a permanent solution together with the system that pulls them into the surface so that they are recessed a bit. Your admonition to keep an eye on the techs is fully warranted IMO. Unfortunately, they usually make it hard for the customer to have direct contact with the tech.

The emblem has two parts. A front and a rear retainer. They need to place the rear retainer inside behind the padding to pull the emblem tight in order to recess it.

So, glue woulldn't help them at all.

I just hope they get the leather upper back into a fully fitted position once they peel it back.

I recently had the upper seat leather changed on my 500 due to the stone color wearing out at the belt line. It is not any easy job as the front seats have components in them that the backs don't. As long as they use your exsisitng leather cover and don't replace the whole thing the fit should be perfect. My replacement still has a few small wrinkles on one side they never were able to get out.

Hope this is helpful.

My dealer called today and received the part. He thinks it looks like it just will pop in. I still think they need to peel the skin off and do it from the rear. Will find out next week.

All fixed. What a major pain in the *** that was. My dealer sent the car out to local auto upholstery shop they contract with. My god, there are so many thing in these sets. Tubes, bladders, fans, wires, pads, plastic, metal, etc...

It is a proverbial rats nest in there.

The AMG emblem is 2 pieces. Reminds me of a file folder fasteners.

You know these things:

Anyway, the front AMG emblem is inserted through the front of the leather upper and it pops out the rear of the seat shell where the rear retainers slips over the prongs. Then you simply bend the prongs and the emblem gets held in place.

The not so fun part is taking the whole seat apart and then putting it back together. The seat belt is a major pain to re install on the seat.

Hope I never have to go through that again. At least now I know how to re-cover the seats if the leather ever wears out.

Not surprised that disassembling the seat would be complicated, but bending tabs to keep the emblem in place seems weak and subject to failure or at least loosening, as I have noticed with my passenger side emblem. I had my driver's side refastened last summer. Seems that it is one of the very few underengineered peices on the car. At least they shipped the part via air, as they cannot ship any seatbelt assemblies via air because they have pyrotechnic devices in them so they must go by surface, which takes at least a couple of weeks.
I admire your attention to detail of how the car is put together. Although I am interested, I have rarely been around when the techs are working on mine and even if I were, I doubt taht they would welcome me looking over their shoulder.
The more I drive the car, the more impressed I am with it.

On a side note, the replacement emblem seemed to be of higher quality in the tab area than stock. Much thicker. Maybe Mercedes finally saw the problems the original OEM piece was having.

You can also have them recess the emblem's as well. I had my drivers side one recessed a little bit more as it is the seat I always use obviously and will be the one that would get snagged again.

While the recession is just a little (1/4"), it is not that noticeable from the other side and will provide much better protection.
