ABC is haunted
Looks like I need to make another appointment with my dealer. My ABC is haunted. While driving to work today the ABC suspension started to raise and lower erraticly on its own. Usually one corner at a time. Must have looked like I had low rider hydralics !
While driving down the freeway it felt as if I was caught in a strong cross wind.
I had this problem with my 2001 and it turned out to be a body acceleration sensor that measures the vertical acceleration of the vehicle body. The body acceleration sensors consist of an electronic vibration module (operating principle spring/mass system). They record the vertical body accelerations and supply signals to the control module.
There is one on each side of the engine compartment right next to the shock towers. They are little black boxes that are about the size of a match box with a wire running to them.

A couple of years ago the CL ABC had a few malfunctions that were discused on the CL forum, but except for a minor leak in my 2002 CL500 Sport over two years ago, which was fixed by a simple tightening of the fittings, no problems. No problems in my 03 CL55, except that when the car sat for about six weeks this winter and settled very low I had to reset the ABC by activating the heigth adjustment. This immediately solved the problem. I am told by the dealer tech that slow pressure leaks can be expected if the car sits for extended periods.
Kind of scary that this far into the system life there are any malfunctions on such a saftey-critical system.

The system exhibited no problem at all today. Guess I will have to wait and see if the problem resurfaces.
I removed and reinstalled the two front sensors last night. Hopefully the problem is fixed, however, my better reasoning tells me it will come back eventually.
