Tranny issue

Was driving yesterday and car acted as if transmission was slipping as the engine would rev but car wouldn't move and also got a check engine light. After turning car off and restarting I made it home. Checked with Star and got the the following:

Any thoughts?

Hey do you have any leaks? Do you have a dipstick to check the fluid? If not they are pretty cheap and worth having. Is it still driveable under light load? How many miles on the car? Could be time for a rebuild if you get on it hard and have a tune. It's pretty much the reason we buy a 65. The trannys get beat up alittle over time if you're running more than Stock power. As you know, I'm guilty of taking mine to events in the past, but its worth it to me.

If you need a rebuild pull it and send it to Southern Hotrod. They are very familiar with these trannys. Quick turnaround and upgrades to hold more power. No change in driveabilty. I'm very satisfied with their work along with others on this forum.

I'd stick with a stock torque converter rebuild. Becareful if someone offers you an exchange. The V12TT have a different part number than other 722 trannys. Our tranny is a 722.649. The torque converter part number starts with 240-xxx. The 55 trannys have different internals and a different converter. I'm not sure if there are any changes between a 215 and a 216, but I know the 55 stuff is different.

No visible leaks..............will have to get a dipstick to check fluid. Car was drivable as I made it home but seemed to to be stuck a lower gear. Car has a tune but is not abused and has 57,000 miles.

Gotcha... Did you try clearing the code and seeing if it will shift out of a lower gear? I guess it could be electronic(sensor) but I think mine started to act up around lower 5X,XXXX miles. The extra torque from the tune will wear the clutches prematurely. The 2-3 shift gets hit the hardest since 1-2 usually spins and has less load as a result. It's not too often for most of us to stay WOT on 3-4, but it happens sometimes.

Cleared the code and will take it out later today to see if it returns. I seem to remember hearing a clunking sound while making a turn before it started acting up.

Mine did the same, I put a new conductor plate and it "fixed" it. I mean it runs well now and I thought I needed a new trans miles ago...

Could bad wheel speed sensors be causing this?

I had a bad speed sensor and it threw a specific error code. It also let you know by illuminating most of the dash lights. Good luck.

Recall which lights were illuminated? I get the "Parking Guidance Unavailable" error along with a check engine light.

I am not kidding when I say "all of them". The cruise control would not work, mirror warning lights were on. It seemed catastrophic until I checked the codes and it highlighted the wheel speed sensor. I don't know much about the transmission other than changing the filter and fluid. The post regarding the conductor plate seemed on track. Oh, and you are a CL 65, I have a '13 CL 63. Different transmission as you probably know.

I has the same codes on a 08CL63. Mine wasn't the speed sensor it was the conductor plate. Lots of good info on conductor plate here. You can try to have the plate refurbished, if you buy a replacement used it sometimes needs to be Vin coded.

I tried doing the fox as a DIY with a local tech, got a few weeks, ended up taking it to the dealer paid 900 parts 800 labor with 12 month warranty. That's was 2 years and 20k miles ago still runs fine (for 15 years and 150k miles)

Found a leak at the Trans Electrical Connector. Replaced connector and all is well.

Glad it was just that. Much cheaper than a new tranny. Warm weather is on its way, I'm sure you'll have peace of mind now when you go out for a blast.
