I recently purchased a new 2019 A220 4Matic. The problem is a noise when downshifting (3-2-1). The noise varies from a light click to a clunk sometimes so intense I can feel it thru the steering wheel. The faster I stop the louder the noise. This problem is present in all modes (E,C,S)
I took it back to the dealer and after a week it was returned with the same problem. The dealer explained there were no codes and stated this is customary for the 7 speed transmission in this model. I spoke to MB customer support to document the problem. They suggested I take the car to a different dealer which I plan to do as soon as possible.
I will appreciate and comments on experience others have had with this transmission. Thanks

Mine does not do that. I will say I have driving problems accelerating from a stop with a jerky transmission. Does yours do that? Eg, at a stoplight and it turns green. You push the pedal pretty quickly and your vehicles send your body <--- and then --> to <--- when it starts actually moving.
The only way for me to bypass that problem is to just downright floor it in sport mode.....
Your issue, I don't; have any problem downshifting that much. However, I don't have 4MATIC, but I have been in a couple loaners when mine was in the shop and it didn't do it either.

I do not have the problem you describe. I have a very slight delay (1 second or so) in acceleration when starting out but otherwise up shifts are very smooth and fast.

Hi Brewman, please tell me you have your problem fixed. I took mine to the dealer 4 times...1 second delay when taking off from a complete stop. They are still not able to find the issue and can’t recreate it. They claim they don’t do anything to my car but the delay problem goes away when I send the car in. But it always come back eventually, two weeks later. I’m losing all my hair over this.

so did you ever get this fixed, or at the very least find out why it is happening? I am having the same problem in my 2020, 19k miles. It isn’t bothersome per day, but I don’t want something to be wrong.

I have the same issue. And mine is not 4matic. A couple of months ago my transmission had an error and did not take the reverse shift nor would not pass beyond the 5th gear. I took it to the MB shop and they replaced the clutch. I thought the shifting noise would go away but it did not. I wonder what it would take for this noise to stop. Originally Posted by Brewman

My dealer just advised me that there is a recall to update transmission control software. He couldn’t tell me what the purpose of the recall is, but I suspect it is to deal with jerkiness on start. Many auto brands with DCT transmissions suffer from this.
I found that thinking of it as a manual transmission driven by a robot is useful. That is to say, apply starting throttle as you would on starting out releasing the clutch on a manual.
