Need to get out of my lease

Guys:

I'm leaving the country in 30 days. I need someone to take over my lease. The car is in Los Angeles.

It's a 2005 CLK500 w/ 7-G-Tronic. Black on Black with 42,600 miles. I have on it options in excess of $12,000. They are as follows:

- Brembo brakes, front & rear, red calipers
- Eisenmann exhaust
- Brabus shocks & springs
- 18" AMG wheels
- custom front grill
- 2006 rear headlights, smoked
- Clear side markers
- Deleted resonator

Car will come with original brakes, original exhaust, original shocks and springs, original rear headlights, original side markers, car cover and two new Michelin PS2 tires (w/ 700 miles) 265-40-18.

The car has fairly new PS2 rear tires and brand new Brembo calipers ($650 value, will show receipt).

Stock options include heated seats, wood steering wheel and Xenon lights.

The payoff is $49,000 (for owning the car). It's only worth $36,000 according to Kelly Blue Book.

The lease payoff is $14,060 with 17 payments of $800.67 to go. I was only allowed 10,000 miles per year or 32,500 total miles. I've already exceeded my mileage by 10,000. Whoever's going to take over the lease could purchase as many miles as he/she wants at $0.20 per mile. The new owner could purchase 27,000 miles (which would give him/her 1,000 miles per month until maturity) at $5,400. I'd offer to split that cost with him/her. The new owner will be able to sell all the current modifications before turning the car in for at least $4,000-$5,000.

Any thoughts anyone? Where should i advertise it? Ebay?

I have a job offer overseas that i can't refuse. I have to leave on January 31st.

Please help!!!

its a gorgeous car...but good lord that's alot of money!

Congrats on the job opportunity and good luck with your lease situation.

You might talk to your stealership. Granted they are not keen on helping people out of a lease, but if you give them the option of helping you or just finding the car abandoned in thier parking lot with the legal headache of tracking you down overseas in an attempt to claim your lease payments...I imagine they might try to work something out. The fees they'll charge might be less than the headache of trying to tranfer a lease that, no offense, doesn't sound like too good of a deal.

I read your post with interest, but for anyone to want to get involved, you have to realize that Buying won't be an option for ANYONE. You are way too far upside down. The aftermarket upgrades are not worth what you paid for them. Though they do look good.

With so many miles on the car, you are going to need to either put cash in someone's pocket so they buy miles, or suck it up and take the hit. Sorry, not what you want to hear, but you drove it too much.

Dude I hate to say this but that is not a good deal.
Why in the world would you go so far over your allowed mileage in 1/2 the term of the lease?
The way I see it, you'll have to pay someone pretty much the entire $5,400 and possibly more to take over your lease.

Oh and your mods are great but you have to realize that they have to be reversed which will cost labor (I am guessing $1000+) to just remove and replace. In fact I'd like to see how they're going to replace the resonators without making it obvious it was done.

Bottom line, this is what they call a rock and a hard place. Just pay the $5400 + some incentive money for someone to take it over. I am guessing $10K total is going to be the minimum you're going to get away with. Sorry man. That sucks. But good luck abroad. Where are you going anyway?

If the mileage were on track, this still would be a tough one to dump. As is, its impossible. $800 month plus paying .20 per mile to drive the car is no deal at all. Trezaei is right, you gotta buy those miles for anyone to even consider it and even then, it would be a tough sell. I agree with Brunelleschi on this...Go back to the dealer as well as contact whoever financed the lease and try working something out. I doubt the dealer could or would back you up since they won't benefit from you bailing on the lease but who knows...stranger things have happened.

Good luck with that

Oh, congrats on the job

Thanks guys. I know i'll have to pay the $5,400 myself. It's such a hassle. Worse case scenario, i'd just keep the car in storage and make the bloody payments of $800 for 17 more months and finally turn it in. I would sell my modifications now.

Going to Dubai. Got a pretty good job offer at a real estate firm. I'm so ready to leave.

I going to pay my MB dealer a visit today. Let's see if he's going to work something out.

Regards,

Joe

Dude!! COol, I'll be in Dubai later this year. Keep me posted. Maybe we can meet up for some chai. You're gonna love it. Good time to go down there too. Congrats. And I would advise against the storage thing. Do you have family you can just give it to to drive and help with the payments maybe??
Here's what I would do, I'd pay $10K cash to someone to take over the lease. I think you could easily do it then. Versus, $13600 + .2(10000)= $15600. Look at it this way, I think even if you pay that, you're still doing better than if you'd bough the damned thing.
Have a great move.,

Thanks bro...i'll let's you know my whereabouts shortly. I'm going to buy another Benz there. I'll always be checking this website. An icy cold chai would be nice!

I'm still thinking about my very limited options.

Joe

Have you tried craigslist?
I have had some good luck with ebay too. Just make sure you answer your phone when people call. That's the number one thing about selling the car. Almost nobody calls twice.

your other option would be to buy some gap coverage and then total the car at around 60 mph. LOL, just kidding dude, although it sounds like it would make a great jackass episode. You seem like a bright guy, I am sure you'll figures something out that doesn't involve jail time.

Guys:

This is your last chance. I'll offer whoever's going to take over my lease $6,000 in cash. You get the car with its modifications and all the other stock parts. Remember, you could always turn around and sell the parts before the lease ends in 17 months.

That's the best i could do. If that option doesn't work, i'm going to keep the car in storage for 17 months and make the payments like a good boy. Please let me know your level of interest. I'm out for good on January 31st.

Regards,

Joe

I don't understand... just offer an incentive of 50/50 or something. You will be better off unloading the car and paying someone $10k than making 17 more payment of $800 for a car that you can't even drive!!! Spending $10k>$13.6k

Did you ever try calling someone at MB finance to see what they could do for you?

I don't know if you read my post before but from my calcs (not including the what it would cost you to remove the stuff and the return fees which are around $600) you will owe around $16K if you keep the car till the end.
I would call a dealer you know and see if they can help you place the car somewhere else. Or just fork out around $10K and call it a day. Having a car at storage is not cheap. You still have to pay:
1) Insurance
2) Storage fees (in CA around $200/mo)
3) Registration fees

Not to mention you'll have to have someone take it in for service at least once (*terms of your lease) and start it up from time to time so it does die. And then the headache of knowing it's there and having to make the payments on it each month. Man it'd be a nightmare. I'd gladly pay the $10k if I were you.

Also you might want to see if you can work something out if you let them know you'll get a car once you get to Dubai. I don't know but it's possible they'll work something out for you.
