Yeah, all the dealers want $17-$220. It's crazy. I hope this works out. Order I still in process. I'm in the middle of getting updates/followups from my vendor. I'm still here. I'll update you guys as soon as I find out.

Visit often to be posted.

Final price breakdown:

$68.00 for the key
$4.50 for the blade key
$12.00 shipping

TOTAL: $84.50

Still no confirmation that the VIN number and proof of ownership went through and the key is on the way. I'll keep you posted if/when it does.

NEW THEORY ABOUT ORDERING A KEY:
Consider this idea. Order the part numbers telling the dealer or vendor that it's not a key, but it's part of a key. That may help justify why the price is lower and why you need to give them the VIN number and proof of ownership. Perhaps you can tell them it's the internals of the key and not the entire key itself. Or maybe tell them it's the older version of the key so they don't add their stupid dealer numbers after the part number. Just a thought. You guys may want to give that a try.

....share your stories here.

As a parts guy I can tell you that wont help your chances of getting the key any cheaper. Most parts guys also have the part numbers memorized because we sell so many keys, so I doubt you would be able to trick them.

We can't even buy the key and blade from Mercedes for $84.50 The reason that we need your VIN is because all keys for the US are cut and coded in Fort Worth, Texas. Mercedes also requires us to get proof of ownership so that we know that the owner of the vehicle is getting the key. It would be too easy for someone to steal a car if we didnt take those precautions.

We sale the remote and blade for $150.00 I do know that other dealerships charge more than list for keys and their parts. Which I dont believe is right, but it happens.

On the other hand, if you can get a key that works for $84.50 you should jump all over it.

BAD BAD BAD News.

I just got an email from my vendor saying the part number changed and they want to add the 9999 at the end of the part number. I emailed back insisting that we stick with the original part number. I doubt it will go through, but let's cross our fingers and try to get this going.

I'm tired of Mercedes Dealers trying to rip us off by adding their own numbers and screwing us over with overly expensive keys. It'd be so much easier if we could just get normal priced keys.

If anyone else has any ideas, I'm all for it. Lay it out here so we don't have to fork over the $175-$200 for a stupid key.

And why do the dealerships parts departments keep asking me where I got the part number? If the part numbers are such a secret, it seems a bit shady.

Final Update

I wouldn't take no for an answer, so I kept pushing with no luck. I am being refunded the money I paid. The order did not go through. Sorry fellas. Here's a glimpse of what happened the past few days:

Actually they did have to have and the just called and the part number changes to 211 766 36 06 9999 and the new price is $121.00. Do you still want to order it?

Rusty Cullens
BuyMBparts, Inc.
Tel 1-800-741-5252
Fax 770-454-9745

-------

the new number is a slightly different part than the old one.
I would like the old part number: 211 766 36 06
Not the one with the ....9999 at the end.
I do NOT want to order the new part.

Is it possible to order the old part?

--------

Rusty,

I'm sure you'll agree, the nearly 100% price difference from $68 to $120 is quite significant. I would appreciate anything you can do to be able to order the original part number we had agreed on at the original invoice price. I realize this situation is of no fault of your own, but I am confident that as a dealer, you have more leverage to work with Mercedes than I do.

If you would like, I have an additional 5 garunteed buyers for this same item. I wouldn't be surprised if I can get you another 15+ orders.

Please let me know what you can do to help. Much appreciated Rusty.

-------

I am not a dealer, I just buy direct from Mercedes. The part number you gave me is for a remote that is no longer available through Mercedes Benz. I have absolutely no control over their part number changes. I will issue a credit today.

That's it. It's over. Let me know if you guys have more ideas. Now, it's not even about the money. I'm just tired of Mercedes trying to mess with us. Raising the price of the key by twofold??? What the hell is that?

I see what you did now. I don't know where you got the part number without the 9999 at the end. But from what I have been told, that part number is an uncoded key. Which means that you wouldnt be able to use it until it was coded. You would have to pay somebody to code it for you. And there isnt a dealer that I know that will code those keys. Even if there was they would charge at least 1/2 an hour labor to do it. On the low end you are looking at $50.00 for half an hour.

The 211-766-36-06-9999 is coded by Mercedes, and they do have to pay their employees for what they do. Like I said before, dealers can't even get keys for the price that they originally quoated you. Mercedes is not trying to jerk you around. List on the remote itself is 140.00 Try being a VW owner. Their keys are around $225.00

So i guess it was a mess up that guys were able to get the keys for $68 shipped total. Check the link in the very first part of this thread, titled "AMGEE's Thread."

Why is it that dealers charge different prices for these darn things? I'm getting quotes as low as $120 and as high as $225 for the same freakin part.

If there is a crack in one of the buttons, maybe you can get it replaced for a new key free under warranty. I am going to try that for one of my other keys.

I got some bad information. I looked at our sales history of the 2117663606, and we sold a grand total of 3 of those keys before Mercedes superceded to the 9999 key.

Mercedes doesn't place any restrictions on what dealers charge. All I can tell you is that MSRP is $140 for the remote. If someone wants to charge less or more than MSRP thats up to them.

Yeah, that's basically the same site as the one shown in the link above. It's about $120.

kind of sad to see what MB did on the price of this part
demand was high and the changed the price
they should have left that low price the same, at least as a token to "older" models to have new style keys, as a thank you for driving an MB right? hahah ya right, they just want more $.

Picked up my 2 new keys last night from Rallye Roslyn NY.

Total cost $347

The keys were not the cool chrome edge ones. "Oh" I said "It's not the new chrome ones?". "No" he said. Huh? Can anyone confirm that the new chrome keys can be made for 04 cars? I wondering whether the lock mechanism was changed so the new key will not fit old cars?

And not even an inkling of a free keyfob or anything.

And the worst part, I asked for *replacement" keys. Stated is clearly on the inital email order. I asked him several times before leaving "These are replacements, so they old key should not work, right?" (I have a pre-owned car, and only got one key. So the other is out there somewhere. So I wanted replacement codes, so the old keys would not work). Guess what...old key still works.

Now I am not sure what to do. I know there is a max number of keys of 8. I think my car now has at least 4, maybe more. I have a case to complain, but if they then go an get keys 5 + 6 made, that leaves me with only 2 for the future if I should need them.

What would you guys do?

PS It did occur to me - wouldn't it be easy for MBUSA to sell the old keys for a reasonable price ($70) and then keep the new keys at their full MSRP. That at least would be some kind of acknowledgment that we existing drivers matter to them. But I guess, unless you are shopping for a new car, they don't even know we exist.

Yeah, it's been a crazy ripoff. I can't believe they actually raised the prices by 100%. that's just nuts. Yo, to the guy bragging about his 20% discount. how did you get that? Stating the price you got it at without letting us know how is basically useless.

In general, if you're going to post something about a good deal you got, the whole purpose of this forum is to share. Let's hear it...

I'm curious. Do you have Keyless Go? If you do, then thats why you didnt get the chrome key. My suspicion is that once they run out of the Black KG keys they will start selling the Chrome KG keys for the older models that did not originally come with them. But that is just speculation.
