Engine Cover Removal

Do you have to remove the brace to remove the engine cover? About to replace my air filter.

I can confirm that it does. T40 Star Bit is needed. Installed a K&N filter and was surprised how much more you can hear the turbo sounds with just the drop in.

I'm interested in performing some maintenance myself.
Question:
The 53CLE AMG being new, are there any manuals/videos or such that provide information on where and what items are located underneath the engine cover, such as battery access, air filters, etc.
I'm uncertain about pulling items/clips etc. without knowing location of replaceable hardware, much less on electronic connections necessary to move forward, etc.

I could not find a manual online. Probably too new a model. My goal was to change the air filter to a K&N. Not as easy as other cars but pretty easy.

How difficult is it to get to the air filters? Are there any videos on how to do it? I can't seem to find a good one.

It is a PIA but just take your time. the brace removal was the easy part of the whole thing

I haven't received the filters yet so I don't even want to start taking anything apart until I have the filters in hand, but is it apparent what needs to be done after the cover is taken off?

I believe this is the K&N part number 33-3068
It doesn't list CLE, it lists GLE and on the BMC website, the one that fits GLE, fits CLE. They look the same as well. I guess I will find out soon enough.

And another stupid question, on the RennTech website under CLE parts, it has the BMC filter and it says it's 2 filters then under that it lists E63, is this a typo on their website or is it the V8 E63 that takes two filters and the CLE only takes one filter?

Disconnect the intake from the front so you can lift the airbox cover. there is four clips that hold the airbox closed. Unclip them and pull the box open. Replace the single filter and the two clips you can see are easy. The two between the cover and the engine are not fun. I used a long screwdriver to help get leverage to close the latch. You are fighting blind which makes it hard.

are you installing a K&N or something different?

I was just emailing with someone from RennTech and he said that if you have an aftermarket filter installed and there's an engine problem, they may not cover the problem under warranty. So now I'm rethinking the new filter thing...

they would have to prove it was because of the filter. K&N backs their product and I have used it with many cars in the past. Usually the issue is because of over oiling the filter when cleaning.

Gotcha. I've used K&N filters in many cars in the past, I just don't think I have in a brand new under warranty car though. I have one in my home HVAC, it works great. I will think aobut it.

For such minimal gains is all this worth it, especially if there’s a warranty issue, does one really want to take on that fight? I’d also imagine mb/AMG uses some pretty decent filters, or they'd use k/n type if it proved to them, it’s truly easy/low-cost power/efficiency and w/o long term sensor issues from oil build up.
