Braking News

No I didn't spell the title wrong. I know everyone can quote or at least easily find the horsepower and torque of each CLE variant, but what about the brakes specs? Afterall, once you get moving, stopping becomes an important aspect of your drive. I'm not a brake expert, but here's what I could find:

CLE 300 MB Standard Brakes - solid rotors measuring 13.0/11.8" colored grey/silver
CLE 300 (optional) / CLE 450 MB Sport Brakes - drilled/ventilated rotors measuring 14.6/12.6" colored silver with Mercedes-Benz lettering
CLE 53 AMG High-performance Brakes - drilled/ventilated rotors measuring 14.6/14.2" colored silver with AMG lettering
CLE 53 (optional) AMG High-performance Composite Brakes - drilled/ventilated rotors measuring 15.4/14.9" colored red with AMG lettering Also 6 piston vs 4.

As far as I can figure, the term "composite: means it has a steel rotor and an aluminum top hat

Interesting news indeed. Looking back at the description given in the MY25 dealer ordering guide there's no mention that the DE6 (P71 Global Code) DYNAMIC PLUS Package offered advanced brakes. Listing the only difference as the caliper paint color:

U70 - Red-Painted Brake Calipers

And from reading numerous reviews for the MY24 it appeared that the calipers and rotors were otherwise no different than the non-optioned CLE 53 (unless I missed it somehow). Here's a clip from an Edmunds MY24 review dated 04.28.2024:

The AMG Dynamic Plus package unlocks both a more aggressive Race mode, and also a Drift mode that enables 100% of the engine torque to be sent to the rear wheels 100% of the time. You also get dynamic engine mounts that help reduce engine movement whilst laying down said rubber strips and red painted brake calipers that serve purely to signify that you've checked that box.

And here's a clip from a recent Edmunds review of the MY25 Cabriolet dated 10.20.2024:

The car I drove in Spain was fitted with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, a worthwhile upgrade if you plan to do any spirited driving in this car. The package includes larger brakes, with the rotors increasing from 14.6 to 15.3 inches up front and 14.2 to 14.6 inches in the rear. Note that the CLE 53 already had larger brakes than the standard CLE. There's also a new drive mode (Race), which itself includes Race Start (launch control) and a Drift mode that will send most of the car's power to the rear wheels for some tail-out shenanigans.

The MY25 MBUSA configurator that's now online features a much different description of the optional package than the previous MY24 version or the initial MY25 DOG dated 07.26.2024. Had this detail been better communicated it's likely that most every CLE 53 buyer would have selected the Dynamic Plus Package option - a relatively inexpensive add at $2000 USD here in the States.

Add: There seems to be an implication that the optional Dynamic Plus Package advanced brakes are new to the MY25 ??

Further Add: Just looked at the German configurator and their description of the optional Dynamic Plus Package brakes as follows:

Die rot lackierten Bremssättel mit schwarzem „AMG“ Schriftzug sind ein attraktiver Blickfang und unterstreichen die Leistungsfähigkeit Ihrer Bremsanlage.

Translation: "The red-painted brake calipers with black 'AMG' lettering are an attractive eye-catcher and emphasize the performance of your braking system."

???

Now that got me curious, I wonder if CCBs will come to the CLE 53?

Looking some other MB models the AMG High-performance Composite Braking System comes in two variations: B06 w/silver calipers and U70 w/red calipers.

I suspect the U70 brakes will be standard on the CLE63 and CCB brakes will be optional for a whole lot more money.

So that means the 53 won't be ever getting CCB apparently.

I don't think most would ever miss CCB's on a CLE. I had them on the Lamborghini and, unless you are tracking the car (I did not), they were a very expensive add on for not much gain.....but looked cool . I will say that that I really liked the low dusting with CCB's, but had to be mindful on what was used to clean your rims, etc. Good info and thanks for sharing!

I understand but I like the fact that they last longer, squeak less (or null) and almost no brake dust (or null), and doesn't fade (although this is mostly important on track obviously).

That said, CCB requires replacement at 50% of its life if I recalled correctly.
