Interesting, I did not know this. It makes sense now. I don't have or need Apple TV, I don't have a Home Pod, but I was thinking of getting the Meross smart smoke alarms, will the Hub that comes with this smoke detector work here? https://www.meross.com/en-gc/smart-s...e-detector/120Originally Posted by superswiss
Unless you have at least one HomeKit hub on your network (Apple TV or Home Pod) and upgrade to the new HomeKit architecture, then HomeKit can be flaky. For example w/o a hub, you can't control your HomeKit devices from your phone, unless your phone is connected to your home's Wi-Fi network. A hub is required for the remote control and automation features.https://support.apple.com/en-us/102557

This is a different kind of hub. It's needed for the smoke detectors to communicate, as the smoke detectors themselves don't have Wi-Fi. Smart home tech is all about hubs and bridges to allow the devices to connect to your home network. Smart home devices use various wireless technologies such as Z-Wave, Zigbee, Bluetooth LE, Thread etc. to communicate. These technologies are optimized for low power consumption, so small battery operated devices such as smoke detectors are possible. Wi-Fi uses too much power, so it's only viable to be used directly by devices that are connected to power such as the Meross or have larger batteries such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. Devices such as smoke detectors don't have large enough batteries to directly support Wi-Fi, so they use one of those low power wireless technologies to talk to a hub and the hub then connects to the Wi-Fi network. Gotcha! I just ordered an AppleTV box, that'll take care of the Hub situation for the HomeKit and I can replace one of my Roku's with the Apple TV box....Originally Posted by superswiss
