Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 vs Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

My Porsche vs MB experience coming from a longtime Porsche owner.

Comparing the 2025 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 and the 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S is like weighing two interpretations of performance luxury: one, a refined grand tourer with cutting-edge AMG engineering; the other, an iconic sports car honed over decades. If raw track capability is the singular goal, the 911 Carrera 4S is undeniably the purist’s choice. But for those seeking a more versatile, luxurious, and daily-drivable performance machine, the CLE 53 makes a strong case.

**Performance & Everyday Usability**
The 911 Carrera 4S, with its rear-engine layout and precision-tuned all-wheel drive, delivers an exhilarating, razor-sharp driving experience that’s bred for the track. But while the CLE 53 may not match the 911’s outright agility, it offers a balance of power and comfort that makes it far more approachable for daily driving and long-distance cruising. The electrified turbocharged inline-six provides effortless acceleration, and AMG’s performance-tuned 4MATIC+ system allows for rear-biased dynamics when you want engagement, but all-wheel-drive stability when conditions demand it.

**Luxury & Comfort**
While the 911 is built with a focus on driver engagement, it remains a relatively compact and firm-riding car. The CLE 53, by contrast, delivers a grand touring experience with significantly more cabin space, a plush yet sporty ride, and advanced AMG tech that elevates daily comfort. The MBUX Superscreen, with its intuitive controls and driver-focused customization, creates a futuristic yet refined atmosphere, while the available Burmester 3D surround sound system transforms the CLE 53 into a rolling concert hall.

**Styling & Road Presence**
The 911’s design is legendary, no question—but it’s also familiar. The CLE 53, with its sleek coupe proportions, aggressive AMG accents, and side profile, offers a more distinctive alternative in the world of high-performance luxury vehicles. It stands out as something fresh and exclusive, without the ubiquity of the 911’s silhouette on the road.

**Practicality & Versatility**
One of the biggest advantages of the CLE 53 is its usability. Unlike the 911’s tight rear seats and limited storage, the CLE 53 provides legitimate space for passengers and cargo, making it a true GT car rather than a strict two-seater with emergency seats. Whether it’s a weekend road trip or a long commute, the CLE 53 delivers performance without the sacrifices of a traditional sports car.

**The Ideal Choice for Real-World Driving**
For those who live for the weekend track day, the 911 Carrera 4S remains a benchmark. But for drivers who want thrilling performance, head-turning style, and the ability to enjoy their car in all aspects of life—not just on the perfect stretch of road—the 2025 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 offers a richer, more well-rounded experience. It blends AMG’s signature performance with luxury, technology, and daily usability in a way that even the mighty 911 struggles to match.

I have owned both and prefer my CLE53 over the Porsche. Thoughts?

Very interesting read. I am waiting for the CLE 63 to come out.....have owned a 911 Carrara S (992) for 4 years. Certainly are different cars! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your impressions. Although I am not a Porsche fan, I will have to admit a 911 is a 911 it is just a different sports car.

You essentially hit the nail on the head with this comparison. It doesn't just apply to the CLE 53. Most of what you say factored into my decision of buying a 2019 C205 C63S Coupe. I've always struggled with the usability of the 911 and the basic design that hasn't changed over the years. BTW, the design of the CLE 53 isn't really new. It resembles the outgoing C63 Coupe, just slightly larger and modernized, but you can easily see the basic lines and form having been carried over from the C63 coupe. For the first time in a 53 it's widebody which was previously reserved for 63 models and up.

I've never been a fan of cars that essentially require a second car, because it's not useable in many situations. For example I did a 2 months European Delivery with my C63 driving almost 7000 miles crisscross through Europe. I had no problems fitting a large and medium size checked luggage in the trunk with room for my laptop backpack and my wife's bag. With a 911 I would have needed a support car to hold the luggage and gear.

I think this is what cars like this are all about. Hit the road for a weekend out of town onto some great twisty roads, or an extended road trip crossing a continent and having enough space for luggage and gear in true grand touring fashion, and the backseats hold adults for short distances, so you can take out your friends and family for dinner etc. A 911 is a weekend car by yourself mostly, which is just too limiting. If I can't enjoy a car like this on a road trip then I don't really see the point, except if you exclusively get it as a track car, but then I would frankly get a GT3 at least. Honestly, outside of the GT variants, the 911 has never appealed to me. The GT variants are purpose built for the track, so you can forgive the lack of usability, but the Carreras are neither here nor there. Not useable for a proper road trip due to lack of storage, but also not at the level of a GT3 for the track.

I came to my CLE 53 from a Porsche Taycan GTS. GTS was a great car and fun to drive. Definitely more precise than the CLE. Also more practical than a 911. However I’m enjoying the CLE more. The big winner with the MB is the tech for me. I feel as if the Porsche infotainment is just 1 or 2 generations behind current cars.

I am replacing tomorrow my 22 Macan S with freshly arrived CLE53...Macan is very nice vehicle but CLE53 is better for my taste... Driving yesterday CLE53 I realized how much I was missing great tight steering feel, reminding me on E92M3 competition... Very good and honest comparison...

Excellent write up.

I just sold my 2022 911 GTS and am sniffing around ordering an AMG CLE53 for much the thoughts you wrote.

I dearly loved my 911, however I could buy two AMG CLE53s and be just as happy for my use case these days.

2019 AMG GT R
Just saw the CLE 53 on the road for the first time today and i liked the stance and body lines on it.

i might be tempted to switch from my GT R in a couple years IF they come out with a CLE 63. Lets see how things go.

Saw a couple in the Markham area last time, looks good 63 might get a even wider stance.
