Self Oil change (Amsoil)
Guys, just want to share my experience with my new oil.
So my baby just turned 29K miles and I've decided to do an oil change a little ealier. So I bought filters , this oil sucker and 8qts of oil. Just want to notice that I've never done oilchanges prior to this one.
I sucked oil down, took me about 20-30 minutes. Removed and replaced oil filter. Added whole 8 qts of oil. Whole job took me about 40 minutes.
Oh my! How much smoother engine now runs! It's just day and night!
First I've noticed that idle is much smoother and there is NO rought idle! Basically, it all went away with new oil.
So far I'm very happy with new oil and filter.
I do have a question. As I said, I've added whole 8qts of oil. Previously I've read that car takes 7-7.5 quarts, that is why I've bought only 8 qts. So after adding all 8 bottles, I run engine for a few minutes, and checked dipstick, it show that I have a little less then half of "normal" level of oil. . It seems like that it gladly will take another quart, but I don't have anymore. So is it ok to run with this level of oil, or rather add more to the "max" mark? Other that this concern I'm very happy. Planning to get Amsoil for my mom's 2000 3.2TL. They state that oil lasts 25K miles, so I have al least 15-20K until next oil change.

don't risk changing every 25k. I did it every 5k. AT most go 10K with synethtic oil. You don't want to know what repair work costs on amercedes engine. Also, I believe you are supposed to add 8.5 to 9 quarts, although 8 probably won't be a big deal.

Capacity.
Oil capacity is 8.5 quarts on your engine, you should have an extra quart on hand to get to the next change anyway. I'd buy two more and top it up as per the dipstick which should leave you with about a quart and a half.
No way I'd ever go more than 10K on an oil change, no matter what the oil company suggested, but maintenance is an intensely personal thing.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Is the computer reading of oil level as accurate as dip stick? coz i never check the oil using the dip stick (too lazy to do that and don't want to get dirty.... hahaha)

I use 0w-40 M-1 and it is smooth as silk.

I assume MB dealer was using Mobil 1 synthetic.

Although, I bought a liquivac for $40+shipping on Amazon.
So if you do a little math this will be $40 liquivac + $65 amsoil + $20 filters.
Definatly not a cheap solution, but I'm telling you, big difference using this oil, plus I get to use DIY solution

Also make sure you use a good quality oil filter with a fleece element and not just the plain paper element filter.
Another recommended practice is to once in a while to send a sample of the used oil for a lab analysis. The place where you ordered the amsoil from should be able to provide you with a sample kit which includes the lab oil analysis costs at about $20/kit.
Please see my posting on 12/9/2005 for results of oil lab analysis in one of my MB cars.

GREAT SUggestion with the liquivac; However I would be cautious about not using recommended part and fluids as this may void your warrenty on your vehicle. If you have a parts store around, you can pick up an oil filter for about $11.00. Mobil synthetic 0-40W is about $5.90 a quart. Total oil change will cost you about $60.00 if you do it your self. Not bad considering dealer cost is $350.00.
Thanks again

You should buy your self another quart of oil but make sure you don't go pass the full sign on the dipstick.
I myself use an oil extrator on all my cars there is alot of people skeptical on using this method because most people will tell you that you will not be able to remove all the dirty oil in there, However in my experience i would always end up putting 1 more quart of oil in than what is recomended just to level it with the dipstip...So it is a better method than removing the bolt from the oil pan. I does take alittle bit longer though.

i just did the oil change the old skool way - removed the bolt from the pan. replaced 5w-40 pennzoil with 15w-50 mobil 1 full syn.
i went heavy weight as i am spending the next 6 months in nevada and texas.

How are you guys sucking the oil out? I always thought you just removed the bolt from the oil pan, let it drain, then replaced with new oil. Is there an advantage to this other method?
