My Supercharger :0)

Well as many of you who know me have seen, I haven't been on the boards much lately. Things have been very busy (which is a good thing) and I haven't had much time for recreational activities.

However,

As today was my first (somewhat) free day, I went down to House of Power to dyno my newly supercharged car.

Before I get to the numbers, let me just say that having the car worked on exposed quite a few little problems that I suppose are normal on a 108k mile car. If you want to know what will most likely go wrong with your high mileage car, read this

1. Left motor mount needed to be replaced (this is the third one)
2. Crank Pulley needed to be replaced (per the recall - still waiting for my refund on this one)
3. Mass Air Meter (POS) was on it's way out before I dropped off the car and had to be replaced. I'm going to consider Mass air meters a 50k mile part.
4. Tranny fluid was filthy! As most of you know, "lifetime fluid" is a crock. I would say that it needs to be changed every 40k-50k miles or so.

Now, on to the good stuff:

Here she is! I still haven't had time to clean the motor, but I think it looks alright for going through 5 years and 108k miles of my "tender loving care."

I have a couple more plans for the appearance (polishing the valve covers, making a custom engine cover from Blue CF/Kevlar) but I love the way the kit looks. The kit uses a Greddy Blow-off valve - it sounds so cool to hear a Benz go "psshhhh," and as I love the sound of a centrifugal charger, I opted for the "loud" one that has an audible whine :0)

Here's a dyno sheet with it's pre and post install graphs:

Aside from a Remus exhaust and this supercharger kit, this car has no other performance mods (i.e. Pulleys, Software, etc.)
The car feels very well mannered around town, but hauls *** when asked to. The more gas it's gets, the more power it gives. Half throttle from a 30 mph roll breaks the tires loose, and when you step on it, it never stops pulling. :0). No drivability issues whatsoever, and on a fast paced run up Glendora Canyon in the San Gabriel Valley heat, temps hovered around 80. During freeway driving, the needle is always below 80.

These numbers were obtained using stock software. When Josh R of HoP gets back from vacation, we're going to experiment with a different FMU, as well as do a dyno pass with some stock wheels to see how much my 40 lb. Carlssons are costing me.

All in all, my car is a completely different animal. Whereas before I would never even bother to watch myself get my *** kicked by an STi, they're easy pickings now :0). The price was right, it has the race inspired look I love, and the performance is incredible. Only thing that sucks is that this has really brought back my speed bug. I'm already looking into how to take this car to the next level. Stay tuned...

Congratulations Josh!!! That Kevlar cover sounds interesting, and I hope your not using that Denatured Alcohol as a fuel additive, heh heh!

My car is faster. Stock CLK55's dyno between 285 and 300.

Kick ***! Amesome numbers too. The 430 V8 is already a monster on the highway....I can only imagine what it can do now with boost. What kind of software did you use or did they just modify your air/fuel ratio to compensate? Also, if you could guess, what kind of 1/4 times would you expect?

Awesome job man...

I plan on taking it to the track and editing together a cool dyno vid as soon as I get some more free time. All of the results were obtained using stock software. As I have a 2000 model, my car still runs the 2.8 software (pre-01). I'm not sure if this has any effect on HP.

Nice setup Josh! Very clean install and they did a great job with the tubing. What PSI are you running and are you able to use 91 octane since this is a non-intercooled kit? Are those dyno number's at the crank? I assume you're running low boost...around 4-5 PSI. I've been toying with the idea of getting a HOP setup on my ride but I am curious if the transmission is going to hold up or not. I have a 99 430 so my trans is the older type. Any idea if it is any weaker than the 00+ transmissions? Thanks!

A 55% HP gain just from adding an SC? Wow! Am I reading that right?

55% can be achievable but it would seem very tough to do with low boost and no intercooler. With an IC, gains of over 100% are achievable with the right setup.

The supercharger is running 8psi of peak boost. All dyno numbers are rear wheel numbers and were obtained using 91 octane pump gas.

An intercooler isn't required on a low boost centrifugal as the adiabatic efficiency is high and discharge temps are lower than a comparable roots or autorotor setup. Higher boost applications would use an aftercooler.

If your tranny is properly and regularly serviced, it should be fine.

Those are very impressive numbers, given that our rides put out around 235 HP or so at the rear wheels from the factory. I know the Vortech's have a relatively high adiabatic efficiency, I'm just surprised that there is no detonation with 8 psi, given that the static CR on our ride is close to 10.25:1. Sounds like HOP has got their **** together. Did it take them long to tune the car once the blower was installed, or was it as easy as adjusting an FMU?
