Installing a Kit

To those of you who have done this before, how much should I expect to pay to get a complete AMG kit painted, and installed on my 320? I already have the kit and it is in good shape, I just need to find someplace to put it on. I was quoted $1400 from some place, that sounds a little high huh? They do great work though, and give a lifetime warranty on their work... What have some of you other guys paid for a kit installation?

are you painting the kit also? or is that just for the install? If it's just for the Install that's way too much. Even if you do repaint it, that's overpriced because with the amg kit there's no major modification like the (Carlsson) to fit. I would pay no more than $700 painted and installed for the Amg....

$1400.00 is about right. The shop has to take off the front and rear bumpers plus side skirts. Then install the AMG parts. I bet the paint cost @ 300-400 dollars depending on the color. Each bumper takes @ 1hr to remove/install. Side skirts take @ 1.5hr for both. When you caculate the hourly rate plus paint then add prep work and taxes, its about right.

i guess it depends on location, i know a couple of people who have paid $1400-$2000 for the complete paint and installation of the Carlsson kit which takes alot of time and patience to fit. I can't see anybody paying this for an AMG factory body kit that's allready pre-fitted. The body shop i usually use charges $250 for install and spray for each bumper and $100 for each side skirt.
How about having the shop paint it and putting it on yourself??? Should save you alot of $$$

That's how I saved money (installing the kit myself). I've notice prices for mods and paint are cheaper in CA. lucky dogs. So I guess location does matter. It cost me @ $1100.00 to paint the lorinser kit (no installation) Gota love those North Carolina prices

A quart of PPG, hardener, reducer, clear, and primer is $200 at retail prices. Prep, shoot, and tack on another three and a half hours of install time and somehow the shop is at $1400???? Painting takes some talent and a shop, but they don't have to get rich all at once. They simply prep the parts, hang them on a wire, and shoot them.

Personally, I'd have the parts shot and install them myself. The last "carry in" items I had painted were done by a place called Gerard Design in Canoga Park, California. I walked in with a scuffed body parts and a couple of hundred dollars. A week later, my stuff looked brand new.

Somebody has to pay retail. At my house we try to make it somebody "else".

Thats a good idea, I thought $1400 was a lot for an AMG kit that is in great shape and has already been on a CLK before. I wouldn't mind taking it apart and prepping it myself and just having them spray it. The only thing about that is I don't have experience with bondo, etc. Should I sand it down? Do I need to primer it myself? Anybody know of any links for taking off the current bumpers and impact strips?

Thanks guys for the help...

There should be no reason why you would have to use bondo if the parts are not damaged. Personally, if you have no experience with prepping (shooting on the primer, wet sanding if required) let the shop do it. A poorly prepped surface will reflect a poor paint job.

As MarcusF pointed out, the savings is in the labor required to remove the part prior to painting and installing it after it has been painted.

yeah, makes sense. I will see what it costs just to have them prep and paint the parts. If its a lot cheaper than a full install, I'll probably go that route...

Where are you located? I can take the front bumper off in less than 10 minutes. I've done it sooo many times I can do it with my eyes closed! I can do it for you.

Ha, that would be awesome, but I am nowhere near MD. I'm in Florida, oh well I will dig around until I find some info on it...

I guessed you were somewhere mid-west. If you're in FL you should be able to fine a better price then $1400.

You have to kind of gently twist it off. Its not held in with bolts or anything. Just snaps into place. Try pulling on the top or bottom and it should pop off.
