Had my 17" AMGs refinished, GREAT RESULTS. PICS (56k DIES).

Many of you remember my series of questions about different wheels i was considering for my car. Given that with my budget (college student, no job in the year) only would allow me to buy new wheels that were nowhere near the quality of the AMG ones i already had on the car i decided to look around at the potential for remanufacturing. I found that both dealers i take my car to have independent guys who come in and do this kind of work for them. I had the work done in Winston-Salem today and drove up to see the finished product today. I was quite impressed, I only had the edges of the wheels redone, but what a difference! They look like new wheels (i only have minor scratches on the spokes and center). All this only cost me $75 per wheel, compared to $500 per wheel for buying new ones

Before (car was driven in Manhattan for a few years, got to know those curbs really well)...

I decided to go with the chrome center star because the painted ones are notorious for chipping away from the center. Im not much on chrome, but i think these are actually pretty tasteful, and were only $12 a piece from the dealer.

Bottom line, refinishing is a GREAT DEAL. My wheels look round again!

great results! now stay away from the curb....or we're going to
force you to clip on curb feelers for all corners!

Yeh, sadly i cant claim credit for that damage. It was like that when i bought it (nice surprise when they backed it off the truck, that and the paint which is mostly fixed now too). I've never curbed the wheels, in fact i havent ever curbed on either of my past two cars now that i think about it. Im always really careful parking, but the way they looked before refinishing, im not sure why i bothered.

That's amazing. Do they actually add material or just grind it down past the abrasion?

They grind it down past the abrasion (it takes off the polished finish), sand it smooth, and repaint it with a shiny metallic paint using an airbrush tool and a piece of paper with the edge curved between the rim and the wheel. It only took him 4 hours to do.

Yes, it was a bit rough when i touched it because some rain had splashe onto it once it had hardened but was not quite cured. I scraped it off with my fingernail no problem. I think i might take some Zymol wax to them before i do too much driving.

Its a paint with alot of shine to it. It looks about the same as the polished metal did, but a bit lighter and not as reflective. If you cant tell, it looks like they did their job
