"EC" on climate control and small stick on column

Forgive me, but I have no owners manual. For some reason the prev owner thought that a book to an 01 clk would add value to the rest of their life.

So, while I surf ebay daily to find these documents, I have some simple questions that I would love to know the answers to.

1) what is the button labeled "EC" on the climate control panel. I have pressed it, along with every other button on there and the little orange light never goes out? Pressing it seems to have no effect on what is displayed on the LCD, nor does it change the airflow? I am more curious than anything right now.

2) On the right side of the steeringcolum there is a stalk (turn signal type lever) that has two unclear icons? One looks like an eye dropper, and the other an eye dropper with a line through it. I have repeatedly fiddled with this lever, but nothing really seams to be happening?

Please tell me before I rearend someone playing with this stuff.

Thanks

1. EC stands for Economy. It manually turns off the A/C compressor. I use "Auto" most of the time.

2. Edit: Response pending further investigation

Welcome

Thank you for the very prompt response, but...

1) whether I am in auto, manual, or even off, that light behind the EC button is always on. Is this correct? As you may have guessed, it bugs me.

2) My cruise control lever is on the left of my steering column, just above the turn signal and wiper control lever. The one on the right remains a mystery????

Thanks again,
Chris

Sorry, I was going from memory as I drove the 300CE today (as most days).

I'll double check and crack open the manual if need be.

The right hand stalk (turn signal type lever) is for the command system. Not navigation but voice commands. It controls the radio, telephone, CD, etc. If you pull it towards you it shoud activate and you can say "radio", CD, telephone and it will attempt to execute commands. If you have the stalk you most likely have the future as they typically don't install the stalk without the other devices. Hope that helps.

Also, I bought my 2001 CLK manual at the dealer for around $30.00.

Oh Sweet. Thanks for the info. Just like a woman, it needs a little sweet talking while pushing the buttons if you want it to do anything for you.

Great info. I don't have COMAND and when I returned home a few minutes ago, I looked in the garage and couldn't find what rallyguy was referring to!

Pulled out the manual and (p. 18) describes what appears to be the stalk.

As to the EC light staying lit all the time, I can't find anything specific to that in the manual....sorry, not much help today.

There was a write up in regards to the EC light staying on all the time. That should shut off when pressed. The EC shuts off the A/C when the climate control is running. There was a thread a while ago as to how to reset it when it's stuck on..since I don't have my CLK anymore, I can't help out.

Thanks CLKFREAK for the headsup on an old post. I found it now (the old post). BTW, I just want to point out that I did search before posting this original question, but that thread didnt come up in my searches. In fact, I only found that thread after this thread explained to me that it was the "economy" button. That whole thread didnt seem to call it EC anywhere, just economy. I will dig into it tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Thanks everyone!!!

if your EC light stays on constantly and doesn't go off when you push the button, there is something wrong with your AC system...it might just need more freon. if that doesn't fix it, there might be something wrong with the actual system. when mine did this it ended up needing a whole new compressor

That small right-side stalk above is the Linguatronic (voice recognition control) system that was part of the W208 K2a option package which had the factory installed cell phone, CD changer + Linguatronic.

The regular K2 was factory install cell phone & CD changer.

COMAND was a stand - alone option to order in addition to all the other options.

I don't have that option, but you had to teach the system with your voice commands (like 3 times each??) to store your own voice so the system would recognize your request.

then after the setup is done, I think you pull the stalk once and say (Radio, Phone (dial #/answer/hang up, CD or Tape).

You can go onto the MBUSA website and download a .pdf file of the appropriate owners manual for your model & year and it has all the pages of the printed book.

rallyguy..welcome to the mercedes family.. with regards to your "EC" button staying on, I had the same thing happen to me last year. It took the dealer 3 times to fix it..mine indicated a leak so they replaced the valve/solenoids.."EC" light went away..A/C was still not that cold so I took it back..it was leaking again so they replaced my entire a/c system under warranty..I would take it to the dealer if its still under warranty because my dealership will warrant everything that they fix for 12,000mi/1yr..anyway, drive safely and enjoy the benz..

p.s.
I too have a 2001 CLK 430 black/black

my EC wasstaying on and I had to replace the 'climate control' unit. I have another MB and it's staying on again. System is full of freon. I need to find the link to how to rest it first before paying to get another one. thanks
