Extended Warranty....is it worth it? (more)
1200.00 or so to take it up to 100000 miles, pending inspection. (They get to make sure the car is in decent shape).
Within a few days of getting the warranty the check Engine light came on.. rhut-ro! 50000mi on my car too. Both 02 Sensors replaced plus the rental vehicle etc..
I KNOW how simple it is to install an O2 sensor. This is NOT a complicated operation at all. But if you get it done at the dealer... 600.00 or so total. So within a week (and right at the 50k mile mark) I just got half my investment back.
It is VERY likely that the 02 sensors will go again in the next 50k miles. If it does happen, I've just paid off my investment and got the repair at a mercedes dealership, and not Joe Snuffy's garage and deli.
If anything ELSE happens, like for instance, the problematic air conditioner that some of these cars have. Well then then yes, it just became a significant return on my investment.
Finally, the warranty should be transferable to the next owner. Effectively the warranty can almost pay for itself in the value it adds for sale/trade in.

But, be aware of some facts. In order to continue the manufacturer's Warranty (like the one that comes with the car 4yr/50,000), you must purchase this warranty within the 1st year and/or approx 12,000 miles. And the original owner must purchase this warranty.
The coverages range by additional years. Mileage is the same.
Original Warranty: 4yr/50,000
Extended Warranty Cost: (approx)
$1,200: Total 5yr/100,000
$1,800: Total 6yr/100,000
etc...
I believe it is about $600 per additional year, but the max limit on mileage covered is 100,000 miles.
If you waited until after your one year mark to buy your warranty (or your current warranty is about to expire), you will not be able to purchase an extended Manufacturer's Warranty.
These warranties will be through a 3rd party company. Those prices will range, and the coverage will differ. Some 3rd party providers will not cover dealer services, requiring you to take your vehicle in to their approved service providers (ie., Napa, Kmart Service Centers, etc...)
So, if your car is still new (within a year), and you plan to keep it a while... i highly recommend the extended warranty.
Hope this helps....
I got extended warranty up to 8 YEARS for like $3500. My friends laught at me 'cause I normally keep my car for only a year or two. However, when I purchased the extended warranty, I was told that I can get a "full refund" if I don't ever use it or I sold the car. So, I guess they "trap" me into their little scam......
