Actually I hope our tires do come to this. I read about the Michelin Tweel about 6 months or so ago in Gizmag -- fantastic technology, incredible in application. Should replace the current tire technology as we know it,,,and with Michelin's money behind the concept, it may just become our new reality. The inherant performance behind this concept is absolutely incredible.
As much of an improvement as the tubeless tire. Or the radial.

It could just be an ignorant guess on my part, but I'm assuming that the production tire will have a sidewall, and that the ones you see the pics of are merely to demonstrate the technology...

Yep, some kind of elasticized fabric is my guess.
Imagine what 5 times the sidewall stiffness of a low-profile tire will do to your handling? Yee Haw! And they can vary the stiffness of the vanes from the center out to the edge of the tire, or from the center of each vane out to both of its edges, for instance, so you'll get the smoothest ride possible - combined with the best quick-deflection and best handling sidewall ever invented. Or, a drag tire that hooks up perfectly every time with just the right amount of flex and bite..... And of course you will see these on heavy-duty and off-road applications even before you'll see them with fitment on passenger cars....
A more complete write-up was done in either PopSci or Gizmag about 6 months ago in their Automotive section....

From the last I read about them in January they don't have any immediate plans to bring these to consumer car markets. They are being developed mainly for military and non passenger vehicles. The tire noise is too loud to be desireable on a daily driver car. But then those pics clearly show them tested on that Audi so maybe its not as far off as the magazine article said.
