DIY - Combo Switch Replacement (Signal / Windshield Wiper Controls)
When my signal lever recently stop cancelling when ever I would make a right turn, I started looking for info on how to fix it. I decided to just replace it, but the dealer wanted 1.5 hours of labor at $120/hour. The part was about $90 with tax. After seaching on line, it seems like these switches are not the best of quailty and eventually wear out (keep in mind my car from hischool, honda accord, still works fine and I use it all the time). I could not find any post regarding how to fix/replace this. So I use a combination of DYI and took it one step foward. See pics below to start (pics were borrowed from a DYI steering wheel post)
1. Disconnect the battery, and keep the wheel strait otherwise you wont be able to access the two screws in pic 4, and have to reconnect everything and start the car to turn the wheel strait. Also extend the steering wheel completely so that theres room for which you need and Extended Torx set behind the steering wheel. Some said they used an Allen wrench instead, but it didnt work for me.
2. Remove the two torx screws behind the Airbag. Keep in mind they are torx 27, not the T30 which you will find is used on the E-class.
3. The Airbag should come off, disconnect the two harnesses behind it and set it aside.
4. 10mm Allen wrench to the middle bolt that holds the steering wheel and remove it. Have someone hold the steering wheel in place, do not use the parking steering lock.
5. Remove the steering and unscew those two screws that are recessed behind the black plastic circle piece. (last pic)
6. Just pull that circle piece strait back and remove the 3 philips screw holding down all the combo switches on the steering column. (not pictured)
7. Undo all the harness and put in your new switch. Slide everything back in making sure to align the switches on thier appropriate tracks and reverse the process.
8. Connect the battery back and reset your windows and sunroof, and your all set.

Damn good write up!!! I have a new steering for my 2000 CLK 430 and I was going to take it to a mechanic but if its this easy then I am going to tackle it myself. The only difference I see is that I have the steering wheel controls but that just adds a couple more wires and thats it right?

Yup, what Danny said, i have the steering wheel controls, so that is why there is 2 harness behind the airbag, not positive, but there mite only be one for non-controled steering wheel .

Curious if anyone knows about the wiring on 99 models. I would like to get the multi-fuction switch steering wheel but am curious if the wiring is there and can be plug and play. I realize the instrument panel needs to be replaced as well but didn't know if there was any version coding of the software that was needed to recognize it.

As for re-wiring a 99...i know its possible, and Steve does it, but at the very minimum you need to change out the instrument panel as you said , and replace that circle plastic panel on pic 4 so that 2 harnesses are coming out, 1 for the airbag 1 for the steering wheel controls, additionallly behind that cirle piece, you need to some how make sure you have all the harnesses too, there are 3 additional harness that connect in to the back of that circle panel on my car, so im thinking one of them belongs to the steering wheel control... might not be too hard, but then again it may be....

Just replaced my switch set and if you cant find the right length T-27 bit, a 5/32" allen will work in the bolts for the airbag also. That might save you a few dollars on a special tool.
