Do Lock Nuts on MBs violate ownership decorum?
When I bought my MB and inquired about lock nuts to secure the AMG monoblocks, MB sales personnel looked at me as if I was extraterrestrial.
I proceeded to do a small market study in the service bay holding area. Sure enough, none of the MBs had lock nuts on their wheels.
Is this only MB fashion in S. Florida, or does it violate in sone way MB ownership etiquette?
BTW Adam, I did NOT refer to Performance Lock Nuts...- that topic I'll save for another thread.
I'm not buying a set.
That's IT!!
Why didn't the MB sales personnel tell me that?
Tnx for your response, - just in time. No lock nuts needed!
Now I can do some serious christmas shopping.
There's been a lot of wheel thefts at UCLA, so my sister bought a set to be safe. Of course she still manages to get curb rash and bump everything in sight!
discussion in reply to my K&N filter question I was afraid I could
go to jail if I installed them...:-). Anyway, there was a recent
thread showing the dyno results with and without the K&N's that
helped. My 55 will be going to the dealer for the 10K service
soon. I'll ask about possible warranty probs. with the filters. I'll
let you know their reply.

This isnt true for the rest of Europe, but apparently theres lots of wheel theft here.
I.E MB do nice locking wheel nuts for all their vehicles - when looking at the nut, its circular with a squigly pattern on it, in which the key has protrusions matching the squigly patern and a hex bolt on the otherside of the key.
The squigly pattern is somewhat like a circle that has randonly been bashed with a hammer ;-)

All MBs supplied by UK dealers with alloys are fitted with locknuts at the pre-delivery-inspection.

Finally, I used an old trick, BUT NOW ILLEGAL, I sprayed it with a healthy dose of FREON then hit it with an impact gun till the key lug broke in half.
Now, I always loosen and torque all of the lugs whenever somebody else has touched my wheels.
I always take them out and replace with the standard bolts when taking to the dealer. When I get the car back, I re-torque all the bolts, and swap the locking ones back in.
I too have had an idiot mechanic overtorque, strip, ruin, etc. lug nuts/bolts several times.

(p.s. also gives me a chance to double check the anti-sieze and thread condition)

This is despite the fact, that about 40,000 cars are stolen annually in the SE Forida/Miami metropolitan area.
Maybe they feel that with the alarm's TOW AWAY feature, it's not needed. I sure jumped when I tried jacking up the front to pull a wheel with the doors locked!
I'm not buying a set.:p
