Question Do Lock Nuts on MBs violate ownership decorum?

Having just bought an RSX-S Acura, as was customary during previous cars, all wheels have a lock nut on their standard wheels.

When I bought my MB and inquired about lock nuts to secure the AMG monoblocks, MB sales personnel looked at me as if I was extraterrestrial.

I proceeded to do a small market study in the service bay holding area. Sure enough, none of the MBs had lock nuts on their wheels.

Is this only MB fashion in S. Florida, or does it violate in sone way MB ownership etiquette?

That's funny. Mag Moss, K&N Performance are alive, but ---has anyone seen or heard from Vivo?

BTW Adam, I did NOT refer to Performance Lock Nuts...- that topic I'll save for another thread.

Maybe they feel that with the alarm's TOW AWAY feature, it's not needed. I sure jumped when I tried jacking up the front to pull a wheel with the doors locked!

I'm not buying a set.:p

LouZ:

That's IT!!

Why didn't the MB sales personnel tell me that?

Tnx for your response, - just in time. No lock nuts needed!

Now I can do some serious christmas shopping.

If an alarm goes of in the parking lot, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

There's been a lot of wheel thefts at UCLA, so my sister bought a set to be safe. Of course she still manages to get curb rash and bump everything in sight!

Yeah, karl, I've been lurking; but after all that legal Mag-Moss

discussion in reply to my K&N filter question I was afraid I could

go to jail if I installed them...:-). Anyway, there was a recent

thread showing the dyno results with and without the K&N's that

helped. My 55 will be going to the dealer for the 10K service

soon. I'll ask about possible warranty probs. with the filters. I'll

let you know their reply.

All MBs supplied by UK dealers with alloys are fitted with locknuts at the pre-delivery-inspection.

This isnt true for the rest of Europe, but apparently theres lots of wheel theft here.

I.E MB do nice locking wheel nuts for all their vehicles - when looking at the nut, its circular with a squigly pattern on it, in which the key has protrusions matching the squigly patern and a hex bolt on the otherside of the key.

The squigly pattern is somewhat like a circle that has randonly been bashed with a hammer ;-)

I had an experience in the mid 80's where some jaska$$ mechanic installed the key lug with an impact wrench after an inspection. When I went to pull the wheel, the lugs would not budge. I used a cheater bar on the regular ones, but it won't work with the key lug because you need to keep force inward on the key as you try to break it loose.

Finally, I used an old trick, BUT NOW ILLEGAL, I sprayed it with a healthy dose of FREON then hit it with an impact gun till the key lug broke in half.

Now, I always loosen and torque all of the lugs whenever somebody else has touched my wheels.

I bought the locking BOLTS from the MB dealer, so funny if a MB dealer thinks you're nuts (no pun intended) for using them.

I always take them out and replace with the standard bolts when taking to the dealer. When I get the car back, I re-torque all the bolts, and swap the locking ones back in.

I too have had an idiot mechanic overtorque, strip, ruin, etc. lug nuts/bolts several times.

Greg

(p.s. also gives me a chance to double check the anti-sieze and thread condition)

So, do we need them or not because the alarm's tow away feature will go off! I just got my ST4's and sure the car looks more flashy.

Yes, it's best to have them. My friend came out one morning and found his brand new SL sitting on blocks. If people know what they're doing, they can have your rims gone before anyone comes to investigate the alarm

Re: Do Lock Nuts on MBs violate ownership decorum?

Well - since I started theis thread almost 3 1/2 years ago, I am happy to report that I am "locknut-free" and have the original wheels.

This is despite the fact, that about 40,000 cars are stolen annually in the SE Forida/Miami metropolitan area.

I guess if I had my wheels inside the car I would feel safe, but the car is usually not in a garage either. Besides one of the things I ask the dealer to close the deal is to include a set of locknuts.

Hmmm...

For my stocks I do not have any lock nuts. For my 19" 2/5 carlssons, I also did not have any lock nuts. Ran them like that for a year in Frisco and no issues. For my 19" Iforged, I had 1 set of lock nuts. Now for my 19/' BR5's I have 2 sets of lock nuts. The front lock nuts are different than the back. HA! :P
