Any surprises to expect when having the valves adjusted?
I have a ticking in the head(s) that sounds like valves/lifters need to be adjusted. Any surprises to look forward to? Anyone else have a little noise from the heads? Nothing major, no knocking.... just annoying. ......and no it is not injector noise, it's definitely as described, valve/lifter tapping. Very light, not a major issue.... just bugs me.
Common? ....or a maintenance issue......

If you have to lift the hood and get close to the source to hear it, then I'd say it's normal because a new SL55 that I scrutinized did that too.
However, a while back, I could hear it from inside the car especially the moment after I start it up in the morning.
A bottle of Techron, some highway drives and the ticking was greatly reduced.

An easy way to isolate the source of the sound is to take a stick with flat ends and put one end of the stick to the valve cover and the other against your ear. Have someone start the car and you will be able to hear the ticking sound much more clearly. In this manner you can pinpoint the rocker or lift that is making the noise. Hope this helps you out.

I had the same issue. I went to the MB dealer and was told that the CLK 430 engine can make this noise but anything over 10 sec should be looked into. He advised to have the oil changed before bringing it in to have the lifters checked. I changed the oil, added BG MOA and the noise was reduced alot. I changed the oil again 3 mos later and the noise is gone completely. It has been over 3 mos and still no noise. I was told that when the viscosity breaks down the oil thins and on startup the lifters will make this noise until the oil has been sucked up past the the top of the lifters to the top of the engine. I would suggest that you change your oil/filter and use some kind of engine cleaner for a few thousand miles then change the oil/filter again and keep it changed on a regular schedule. I initially didn't think this would work because I only use Mobile1 0 w40 but it worked for me. My ticking wouldn't stop until after I drove about 1 mile in the summer. Now, I don't even hear the ticking at startup. I drive my 00 CLK 430 about 32K per year and at 171K on the ticker now, I have peace of mind everytime I start my car. I hope this helps.

mobile1 like all other synthetics should have extra cleaners in the oil. im surprised that the engine cleaner did anything other than eat the engine seals. BTW what does BG MOA stand for?

I'm sure I've posted on this before but in short, I had this going on with my CLK 430. Dealer ran a GM top end cleaner through it twice and I don't notice it any more. Good luck.

BG is the Brand name. Many shops use the entire line. Products are great.
www.bgprod.com
MOA is the oil additive in the lineup.
BG MOA® prevents oxidation and thickening of engine oil under even the most severe stop-and-go, high temperature driving conditions. It fortifies all qualities of engine oil to provide superior long-lasting engine protection and helps maintain optimum engine performance. BG MOA® keeps piston ring belts, hydraulic lifters and other engine components clean to help extend engine life and reduce costs of operation. It is compatible with both synthetic and petroleum-base oils.
The Thin Film Oxidation Uptake Test (TFOUT), ASTM Test Method D4742, proves BG MOA’s remarkable resistance to oxidation by more than 200% longer than six major brands of SL quality oil. At the conclusion of the API Sequence IIIF Engine Test‚ a major brand, high-quality reference oil barely passed the 80-hour test with a viscosity increase of 255 percent. At 80 hours, another brand of oil fortified with BG MOA® had a viscosity increase of only 57 percent. At the conclusion of the triple-length, 240-hour test, it was still well within the viscosity limits with an increase of only 198 percent.
