wallet key. no remote functions. has passive IR interrogator to work with
ignition system. the mechanical key does the usual, ie open doors, trunk,
and cycle window/roof.

Question On Mechanical Key Release

I received my key last night. Brings a big smile to my face. Unfortunately I immediately gave it the the tire shop so they could install my 19" rims and and new Eagle F1 Ds-D3 tires. Didn't even look at it more than 30 seconds (The rims and key came on the same day).

My question is, I inserted the mechanical key and then noticed that I need or needed to insert the very small plastic release button for the mechanical key. Can this still be done and if so- how? It didn't come with any instruction. Thanks in advance for anyone that knows.

I did the same thing. Stick a paper clip in the sliderelease for the mechanical key and slide it over...the key pops out. Pull it all the way out and set it aside. Then you have to force the plastic piece into the sliding release...I had to press it pretty hard.

i didn't have to install plastic button. i've also read of different colors available.
mine was pretty boring. pulled it out of wrap and Smartkey and mechanical
worked out-of-baggie. no programming, no assembling except to put mechanical
key into Smartkey.

Mine came the exact same way. Nothing tricky about it. I love the key.

Arabian Knights. Why do you have any extra one???? Why don't you just keep it. They can't be reprogrammed. Your stuck with it. Only good thing is, if you break your chrome key or it gets worn, just slide the guts out and put them into your spare key and basically you have a new one.

I got my keys today too. I ordered mine from oempartsdirect.com when it was still around $61 per key. I ordered 2 for my CLK. I am SO happy with them. Just one week ago I was going to go to the local MB dealer to order 2 of them for about $285 + tax each. I didn't get to do it because of laziness and procrastination. Then I found this thread and saved about $400. I want to thank AMGEEZY and others who contributed to this thread and made ordering it so easy.

I noticed that the price for the key has been increased to about $114 per key at the same website. I actually talked to the person running the oempartsdirect.com before I got my keys. He told me that MB raised the price on the keys for the dealers, so the price had to go up to $114. He is not jacking up the price because he sensed a big surge in demand. I told me he got 26 orders for the keys in a period of few days.

I also received my key yesterday and it works great. The old key had a very limited range for locking and unlocking the car doors, now the range has increased to 10 to 15 feet as reported by an earlier poster.
Needless to say, I am very happy with my key. Thanks AMGEEZY.
By the way, I ordered my key early in the morning on the day that they raised the price. Talk about being lucky!

1st post here - may as well make it a positive one

I wanted to make my first post on this board a

THANK YOU AMGEEZY

for the tip on the SmartKey set. Wow, what a savings!

I just bought a 430 CLK and of course it didn't come with more than one key so I just ordered one and got it for $128 shipped. It may not be the $68 from the original post, but the deal is WAY better than the local dealer. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now, to the new car and the mods list ;-)

Yeah I agree that the range got better with the newer key. I got mine for $89 from the dealer after convincing him that I won't come back if it doesn't work. People who don't know cars don't even realize the key doesn't belong to my car originally they just know it's really nice looking

That first gen smart key is hideous by the way. I'd gladly trade that with the old skool MB key (non remote).

Wink Got the key.

I ordered on 01/31/07, received the key on 02/12/07. Thanks AMGEEZY for the tip. Price is going up now ($114.00) when I order another key for my wife's car, no reason to have another one (while we already had 3 keys : 1 valet & 2 regular keys), with $61.58 I would order, but not $120 (still better price than @ Fletcher Jones $200.00). Again thanks AMGEEZY.
