Got 1st speeding ticket today!!

Hey guys (and ladies).....On my way home after a stressful day at work and I'm on the road basically alone.....approximately a mile down the road a cop steps out in traffic in front of me and motions me to pull over...I roll down the window and he explains that the laser clocked me at a high of 53 and a low of 52 in a 35 zone!! He asks for my credentials and came back w/ a $90 ticket.......

So since this is my first ticket should I:1) pay 2)go to court 3)send the ticket to the district court explaining what could have caused this infraction, which is an option in Maryland (from there they'll issue a hearing, not a trial...allowing me to explain to a judge--no appearance by cop)..

Today has been such a bad day!!

i say go to court, being your first ticket they are more than likely to reduce the penalty.

Just disputed my speeding ticket yesterday at a "contested hearing" as they call it in WA infront of a judge. Denied dismissal but offered to reduce the penalty to no points and a fine. I was happy.

Still a lot lucky than I was, $116 ticket 32mph on 25mph zone. CA judge did not give me any break when I explained that I was at 28mph instead of 32mph. "The fine is the same even you were at 26mph", the judge said. lol

Depending on the State, you may be able to go to driving school and get it dismissed without points. Or, just pay it if you don't habitually break the speed limit. The points generally last one year.

On this note, and a semi hijacking, has anyone tried or used the BLINDER X-TREME M20 or M40? I was seriously thing of trying this. I have used an escort in one form or another since 84. But with laser basically when it goes off you now know when you are getting a ticket. Here is a video if you have never seen these work.

I would be curious if anyone uses one and what their thoughts are.

are laser jammers legal? I know radar jammers are not legal. If so I want one.

T, forget the money, save the points! Go to court and use the distraction method. (i.e. - look hot!)

I've taken a copy of my (clean) driving record to court with me before to prove my point. Try that.

They are legal, Radar jammers are illegal because they emit radio waves which are FCC regulated but laser jammers are emitting light waves(just a high power flashlight)

I know people that drive around with their highbeams on during the day... they say it confuses the laser gun.

Yes they say is helps but only really if they are using your lights as the source. But at best it just delays a moment, but most use the license plate anyway.

Dang, had a real close call today too. Was talking on the phone, and all of a sudden my laser detector goes off. I look down and I am doing about 8 over. This is a steep downhill and only 30mph, the cops love it. Just like 430girls this guy just stands by a pole, lights you up and would just wave you over. I don't know if I stabbed my breaks in time before he could get a reading or he was looking for bigger fish but he did nada. I am not a huge speeder but this is why I have a detector, and now.. going to be an owner of the M20.

Go to court, talk to the judge and you might be surprised.

Worse case is you pay the $90, go to traffic school for another $50 and 8 hours of your time, but the ticket will be erased from your records.

DON'T detonate a van load of explosive fertilizer in front of the court house.
It makes a mess, and it will NOT get the ticket dismissed,
and it's AGAINST THE LAW, unless you are a moslem, and you incinerated infidels,
then, according to koranic law, it is a forgiven sin.
In the alternative, if you are Teddy Kennedy,
then you can do anything you want.

Depends. But, if you don't want the points, go to driving school. Asking for a dismissal just because you haven't had a ticket in x years isn't going to work.

In most states radar and laser jammers are legal.. unfortunately for me its illegal in california....I got a rocky mountain radar combo one.. its a pretty slick unit... but i avoid having it on for fear of a super ticket.... =)

http://www.rockymountainradar.com/faq_detail.sstg?id=31 <-- this is a link from a FAQ that tells you which state these dectectors are illegal.

They have enough evidence, the only hope is the cop won't show up.

I am not 100% sure , but I heard if you go to court, they won't allow you to take traffic school.

So my suggestion is. Pay the ticket, take online traffic school and try not to get another ticket in the next 36 months.

I actually got a similar ticket a couple months ago for 58 in a 40 on a straight road where 50 is the norm. I have a family friend that's a lawyer and he took care of representing me and got the ticket thrown out for a charitable donation, I didn't even have to show up to court. Given how little time and effort was involved I say that it's worth it to contest your ticket, but make sure you get a lawyer... the extra cost of hiring one is definitely worthwhile.
