custom cold air intake (pics).....
there was a thread recently about intakes for the 320. here are the pictures i said i would post of what i did.
i had a short ram intake, but i was pullin in the same hot air thats under hood. so i made this new one by fitting different intake pipes together until i had a shape that would work.
under the old air box is a little compartment that is as far from the engine you can get. there is a panel at the bottom though, so water wont get in there. there is a piece of filler on the stock bumper that is supposed to look like mesh, it comes out (but something needs to go in its place, like real mesh, to keep water from coming in in the rain), allowing actual cold (or cooler air) to come right in contact with the filter. this compartment serves as its own airbox almost.
the bottom 30% of the piping (everything i couldn't reach once in place) is wrapped in a product called "THERMO SHIELD", i will do the rest of the pipe tomorrow when i have more time. this product has an adhesive on one side and comes in 1 1/2 strips 15ft long. once on it blocks most of the heat that would normally heat the pipe (these pipes do get HOT!!!), assuring the cool air stays cool on its way to the engine.
let me know what you think.

Looks good. Watch for puddles of unknown depth though. Hydrolocked engine is bad news.

I Actually Got The Extra Piping At Auto Zone. I Guess They Sell All These Pieces Now That You Can Fit Together To Make Seriously Custom Piping. All Different Angled 4" And 6" Pieces, And Straight Pieces. They Even Had A Spliter. I Almost Made A Double Intake. It Wouldn't Have Done Much Of Anything Extra For The Car, It Just Had The Potential To Look Cool. I Choose To Be Pragmatic Though.

Did you end up keeping this intake or have you gone back to OEM?
I think I want to do this but with black plastic tubing.
Plus make a custom heat shield box like this one.

The stock airbox is already a cold-air intake, as all the air from the air box is being drawn in thru the grill. The only thing I think would help would be to wrap a insulator to keep the heat out around the airbox tubing. I dunno if even that would work?
