There are three fuse boxes. Under the hood, behind the panel on the left side of the dash, and in the trunk. I thought the cigarette lighter was #23 under the hood.
  • You've found the fuse box under the hood.
  • To access the dash fuse box, open the left door and look at the side of dash - there's a cover. Remove that and you will see the fuses.
  • The trunk fuse box is under the false floor. Behind (moving toward the front of the car) the battery there is a black box. Remove the cover.

My experience:
The ML had the same problem. It turned out the two clips(for lack of a better description) were not engaging the lighter when I pushed it in. Try pushing it in as far as it will go and holding it for about 20 seconds. If it is hot, then that's probably your problem. To fix: I unattached the battery so as not to short anything out and just pried the two metal thingys upward. Works like a charm

Man, I have the same problem. I have never diconnected the battery yet. Is there anything else I should be prepared for before doing so. I have a 01 430 w/ navi, xenons, heated seats ect. Will I have to reprogram other things?

Well before you do anything, press it in and hold it for 20 seconds to see if it gets hot. The two metal things engage the square holes you see here and after time and use, recede and need to be pushed inward again.

No, 20 secs didnt work for me. It didnt get hot at all. I did look inside the lighter hole and it looks like one of the clips may need to be pryed inward a bit. Is this what your talking about doing. Thanks dog.

If you use a non conductive tool to pry the dohickie out you won't have to disconnect battery. Use a stiff peice of plastic .

Sweeeeeeeeeeet.........Okay I fixed mine. I used a golf tee to pry the two deals inward on the inside of the cig lighter (once the actual lighter was removed). The golf tee worked great. The only thing now is that when the lighter is lit, it then shoots the lighter out.......oh well at least its working now!

Thanks guys

Thats interesting. Mine doesn't work either, no matter how long you push it in. I guess i have the same problem? So push the two 'doohickeys' in huh? I wuld think that they would need to be 'pulled out' (to engage the two square holes in the lighter/element) instead of 'pushed in'. Anybody got pics of the inside of the lighter to illustrate these 'doohickeys'?

You pry them inward (towords the center of the hole) not outward. It's just two litte clips inside the lighter hole.

Thats exactly it. The power souce is fine it just never worked until I pried out the two deals. Now it works great. I think over time they just get stretched out.

Try it, it worked on mine.

Yours must have really been pushed in, as far as I can deduce, the doohickeys hold the lighter in place as it's getting hot and must also provide either neg or pos polarity.
